Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy designed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Devised by Francine Shapiro in 1987, it involves talking about traumatic memories while engaging in side-to-side eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation. It is also used for some other psychological conditions. EMDR is recommended for the treatment of PTSD by various government and medical bodies citing varying levels of evidence, including the World Health Organization, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council, and the US Departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense. The American Psychological Association does not endorse EMDR as a first-line treatment, but indicates that it is probably effective for treating adult PTSD. Systematic analyses published since 2013 generally indicate that EMDR treatment efficacy for adults with PTSD is equivalent to trauma-focused cognitive and behavioral therapies (TF-CBT), such as prolonged exposure therapy (PE) and cognitive processing therapy (CPT). However, bilateral stimulation does not substantially contribute to treatment effectiveness, if at all. The predominant therapeutic factors in EMDR and TF-CBT are exposure and various components of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Because eye movements and other bilateral stimu…

Francine Shapiro (February 18, 1948 – June 16, 2019) was an American psychologist and educator who originated and developed eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), a controversial form of psychotherapy for resolving the symptoms of traumatic and other disturbing life experiences. In 1987, she claims she had an experience walking through a park that led to the observation that moving her eyes from side to side appeared to reduce the disturbance of negative thoughts and memories. Challenging this narrative, psychologists Gerald Rosen and Loren Pankratz show that Shapiro was actually involved in the pseudoscientific practice of neurolinguistic programming (NLP) from 1985, conduct…

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing as a potential treatment for substance use disorders: study protocol.. ABSTRACT Background: Prior exposure to traumatic events significantly increases the risk of developing substance use disorders (SUD), while having SUD, in turn, elevates the likelihood of encountering additional traumatic events. Despite this relationship, the consequences of trauma frequently go undetected and untreated in this population. The trauma-focused intervention eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), a first-line treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), has shown promising therapeutic potential in SUD patients. However, its underlying neur…

Judicial assessment of testimonial reliability after EMDR therapy: a case-series analysis.. Introduction Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a first-line psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite its established clinical efficacy, concerns have been raised regarding its potential effects on autobiographical memory and testimonial reliability in judicial contexts. Given the reconstructive nature of memory, this study aimed to examine how Italian courts address EMDR when evaluating witness credibility. Methods A targeted jurisprudential analysis was conducted using the DeJure legal database. Final decisions of the Italian Supreme Court (Corte di Cassazione)…
