On 6 February 2023, two earthquakes devastated southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. The first earthquake occurred at 04:17:35 TRT (01:17:35 UTC), measuring moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.8. The epicenter was 37 km (23 mi) west–northwest of Gaziantep. This strike-slip shock achieved a Mercalli intensity of XII (Extreme) around the epicenter and in Antakya. It was followed by a Mw 7.7 earthquake, at 13:24:49 TRT (10:24:49 UTC). This earthquake was centered 95 km (59 mi) north-northeast from the first. There was widespread severe damage and tens of thousands of fatalities. The Mw 7.8 earthquake is the largest to strike Turkey since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake of the same ma…

Hippocampus alterations in post-traumatic stress disorder among survivors of the consecutive Kahramanmaraş (Turkey) earthquakes in February 6, 2023: earthquake brain at the end of the first year.. Background On February 6, 2023, a series of earthquakes resulted in approximately 60,000 deaths and 120,000 injuries in Turkey and Syria. These earthquakes caused serious psychological problems in addition to their social and economic effects. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most frequently reported psychiatric disorder among the survivors of earthquakes. The aim of this study is to investigate the hemispheric asymmetries and volumes of hippocampus and amygdala of survivors und…

The digital pulse of disaster: tracking public health needs via X during 2023 Türkiye earthquakes.. Background Social media plays an important role in disseminating information and identifying real-time needs during disasters. Its importance was shown on February 6, 2023, when Türkiye was struck by two destructive earthquakes. This resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities and economic devastation. In the early aftermath, social media was utilized as an important instrument for public coordination, information dissemination and social mobilization. Methods The study analyzed 697,313 tweets shared between February 6 and 14, 2023. Data were acquired via the X API v2 and processed to assess…

Three years of public operation and a first public alert of Israel's earthquake early warning system.. The Israeli national Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system, Truaa, has been operational since January 27, 2022. Based on ShakeAlert's EPIC algorithm, it issues public alerts for earthquakes of magnitude ≥ 4.5. On October 26, 2024, the Israeli Defense Forces detonated 370 tons of explosives in southern Lebanon. Truaa misidentified this as an M5.2 earthquake, triggering a public alert to over a million people. Manual analysis later revised the magnitude to M3.6. The overestimation resulted from the explosion's proximity to a seismic station and a fixed depth assumption of 8 km, despite its n…

This is a list of earthquakes in 2023. Only earthquakes of magnitude 6 or above are included, unless they result in a significant impact due to major damage, deaths or serious injuries. All dates are listed according to UTC time. The maximum intensities are based on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale. Earthquake magnitudes are based on data from the USGS. Nineteen earthquakes ≥M7 occurred within the year, with no ≥M8 earthquakes recorded for the second consecutive year. Up to 66,900 people died from earthquakes in 2023, the highest death toll for earthquakes since 2010. At least 59,488 people died in the Turkey–Syria doublets of February, which dominated world headlines because of their…

On 24 June 2026, doublet large strike-slip earthquakes affected northwestern and central Venezuela. The epicenter of the first earthquake was in Veroes Municipality, west of San Felipe, the capital city of Yaracuy. This earthquake, which measured Mw 7.2, occurred at 18:04 VET and was classified as a foreshock. It was followed by a Mw 7.5 mainshock 30 seconds later centered off the coast of La Guaira, west of Catia La Mar. The two earthquakes caused widespread damage across the country, particularly in the capital Caracas and especially the state of La Guaira, where 80% of buildings collapsed. As of August 2026, at least 6,500 fatalities were officially confirmed, about 226,700 were injured…

Seafloor geodesy unveils seismogenesis of large subduction earthquakes in Mexico.. Based on measurements of near-trench deformations of the oceanic and overriding plates, in this investigation, we elucidate the tectonic and mechanical processes leading to the M w 7.0 (moment magnitude of 7.0) Acapulco, Mexico, earthquake in 2021. We exploit unprecedented ocean-bottom observations using ultralong-period "tilt mechanical amplifiers," along with hydrostatic pressure, global navigation satellite system, and satellite interferometric synthetic aperture radar data. The joint inversion of these geodetic data, template-matching seismicity, and repeating earthquakes, revealed the first two shallow s…
