The cerebrum, the largest part of the human brain, consists of two cerebral hemispheres.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
The human brain is the central organ of the nervous system, and with the spinal cord, comprises the central nervous system. It consists of the cerebrum, the brainstem and the cerebellum. The brain controls most of the activities of the body, processing, integrating, and coordinating the information it receives from the sensory nervous system. The brain integrates sensory information and coordinates instructions sent to the rest of the body. The cerebrum, the largest part of the human brain, consists of two cerebral hemispheres. Each hemisphere has an inner core composed of white matter, and an outer surface – the cerebral cortex – composed of grey matter. The cortex has an outer layer, the neocortex, and an inner allocortex. The neocortex is made up of six neuronal layers, while the allocortex has three or four. Each hemisphere is divided into four lobes – the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes. The frontal lobe is associated with executive functions including self-control, planning, reasoning, and abstract thought, while the occipital lobe is dedicated to vision. Within each lobe, cortical areas are associated with specific functions, such as the sensory, motor, and association regions. Although the left and right hemispheres are broadly similar in shape and function, some functions are associated with one side, such as language in the left and visual-spatial ab…

The cerebrum and cerebellum of the fixed human brain: efficient and unbiased estimates of volumes and cortical surface areas.. Extremely old and relatively new stereological methods for the efficient and unbiased estimation of volumes and surface areas were applied to fixed human brains. Brains from twelve subjects (six males aged 76-81 years, six females aged 70-98 years) were hemisected. Cerebral hemispheres and cerebellar halves from both sides were sliced systematic randomly for Cavalieri estimates of volume and vertical sectioning estimates of cortical surface area. Weights and linear dimensions were also recorded. It took less than 30 minutes per cerebral hemisphere to estimate total…

The cerebrum, or the largest part of the vertebrate brain, is made up of two cerebral hemispheres. The deep groove known as the longitudinal fissure divides the cerebrum into the left and right hemispheres, but the hemispheres remain united by the corpus callosum, a large bundle of nerve fibers in the middle of the brain whose primary function is to integrate sensory and motor signals between the hemispheres. In eutherian (placental) mammals, other bundles of nerve fibers like the corpus callosum exist, including the anterior commissure, the posterior commissure, and the fornix, but compared with the corpus callosum, they are much smaller in size. Broadly, the hemispheres are made up of two…

The cerebrum (pl.: cerebra), telencephalon or endbrain is the largest part of the brain, containing the cerebral cortex (of the two cerebral hemispheres) as well as several subcortical structures, including the hippocampus, basal ganglia, and olfactory bulb. In the human brain, the cerebrum is the uppermost region of the central nervous system. The cerebrum develops prenatally from the forebrain (prosencephalon). In mammals, the dorsal telencephalon, or pallium, develops into the cerebral cortex, and the ventral telencephalon, or subpallium, becomes the basal ganglia. The cerebrum is also divided into approximately symmetric left and right cerebral hemispheres. With the assistance of the ce…

The cerebral cortex, also known as the cerebral mantle, is the outer layer of neural tissue of the cerebrum of the brain in humans and other mammals. It is the largest site of neural integration in the central nervous system, and plays a key role in attention, perception, awareness, thought, memory, language, and consciousness. The six-layered neocortex makes up approximately 90% of the cortex, with the allocortex making up the remainder. The cortex is divided into left and right parts by the longitudinal fissure, which separates the two cerebral hemispheres that are joined beneath the cortex by the corpus callosum and other commissural fibers. In most mammals, the cerebral cortex is folded…

Modeling the Impact of Lesions in the Human Brain. Lesions of anatomical brain networks result in functional disturbances of brain systems and behavior which depend sensitively, often unpredictably, on the lesion site. The availability of whole-brain maps of structural connections within the human cerebrum and our increased understanding of the physiology and large-scale dynamics of cortical networks allow us to investigate the functional consequences of focal brain lesions in a computational model. We simulate the dynamic effects of lesions placed in different regions of the cerebral cortex by recording changes in the pattern of endogenous ("resting-state") neural activity. We find that le…

Neuroanatomy, Cerebral Hemisphere. The brain consists of the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. Taking up the majority of the brain space is the cerebrum. The cerebrum controls somatosensory, motor, language, cognitive thought, memory, emotions, hearing, and vision. The cerebrum is divided into the left and right hemispheres by a deep longitudinal fissure; the two hemispheres remain in contact and communication with one another by the corpus callosum. Each hemisphere further subdivides into a frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal lobe. Each lobe carries out different functions.. Source: StatPearls. Year: 2020

A probe into the coordination and exploitation of the two cerebral hemispheres. The potentiality of human cerebrum is the most rich part that is worth tapping .One of the educational aims is to exploit human potentiality in order to raise his study and work efficiency. The paper tries to expound the coordinating activities of the two cerebral hemispheres and the possibility of the exploitation of the two cerebral hemispheres function. And it also introduces two easy and practical ways of exploiting the cerebral hemispheres.. The lateralization of brain function (or hemispheric dominance or lateralization) is the tendency for some neural functions or cognitive processes to be specialized to one side of the brain or the other. The median longitudinal fissure separates the human brain into two distinct cerebral hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum. Both hemispheres exhibit brain asymmetries in both structure and neuronal network composition associated with specialized function. Lateralization of brain structures has been studied using both healthy and split-brain patients. However, there are numerous counterexamples to each generalization and each human's brain develops differently, leading to unique later…

CEREBRUM‐7T: Fast and Fully Volumetric Brain Segmentation of 7 Tesla MR Volumes. Abstract Ultra‐high‐field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enables sub‐millimetre resolution imaging of the human brain, allowing the study of functional circuits of cortical layers at the meso‐scale. An essential step in many functional and structural neuroimaging studies is segmentation, the operation of partitioning the MR images in anatomical structures. Despite recent efforts in brain imaging analysis, the literature lacks in accurate and fast methods for segmenting 7‐tesla (7T) brain MRI. We here present CEREBRUM‐7T , an optimised end‐to‐end convolutional neural network, which allows fully automatic segme…

An insight into the neuroanatomy of the basal ganglia in the cerebral hemisphere. The basal ganglia, or nuclei, are cluster of gray matter masses located within the white matter of the cerebral hemispheres. The anatomy and relationships of the basal ganglia can be confusing due to the varying terms and definitions used to describe this region. Understanding their anatomy is important because of their diverse connections and relationships with motor and cognitive functions. This anatomy must be clearly defined so that clinicians can identify any disorders affecting them. This short article aims to provide a simplified, concise, and up-to-date overview of the basal ganglia of the cerebrum. Th…
