Hampi or Hampe (Kannada: [hɐmpe]), also referred to as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the town of Hampi in Vijayanagara district, east-central Karnataka, India. Hampi predates the Vijayanagara Empire; it is mentioned in the Ramayana and the Puranas of Hinduism as Pampa Devi Tirtha Kshetra. Hampi continues as a religious centre, with the Virupaksha Temple, an active Adi Shankara-linked monastery and various monuments belonging to the old city. Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara (Karnata) Empire from 1336 to 1565 (as Vijayanagara), when it was abandoned. It was a fortified city. Chronicles left by Persian and European travellers, particularl…

Vijayanagara (transl. 'City of Victory') was the capital city of the historic Vijayanagara Empire. Located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, it spread over a large area and included sites in the Vijayanagara district, the Ballari district, and others around these districts. A part of Vijayanagara ruins known as the Group of Monuments at Hampi has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hampi, an ancient human settlement mentioned in Hindu texts, houses pre-Vijayanagara temples and monuments. In the early 14th century, the dominant Kakatiyas, Seuna Yadavas, Hoysalas, and the short-lived Kampili kingdom, who inhabited the Deccan region, were invaded and plundered by armies of Kh…

Anatomically modern humans are estimated to have first arrived on the Indian subcontinent between 73,000 and 55,000 years ago. The earliest known human remains in South Asia date to 30,000 years ago. Sedentariness began in South Asia around 7000 BCE; by 4500 BCE, settled life had spread, and gradually evolved into the Indus Valley Civilisation, one of three early cradles of civilisation in the Old World, which flourished between 2500 BCE and 1900 BCE in present-day Pakistan and northwestern India. Early in the second millennium BCE, persistent drought caused the population of the Indus Valley to scatter from large urban centres to villages. Around 1800 - 1500 BCE the Indo-Aryan tribes moved…

The Vijayanagara Empire, also known as the Karnāta Empire, was a late medieval Hindu empire that ruled much of Southern India. It was established in 1336 by the brothers Harihara I and Bukka Raya I of the Sangama dynasty. The empire rose to prominence in the aftermath of the invasion of the Delhi Sultanate in India by the end of the 13th century. At its peak in the early 16th century under Krishnadevaraya, it subjugated almost all of Southern India's ruling dynasties and pushed the Deccan sultanates beyond the Tungabhadra-Krishna River doab region, in addition to annexing the Gajapati Empire up to the Krishna River, becoming one of the most prominent states in India. The empire's territory…

The following is a list of some of the largest buildings that are considered palaces in terms by area. The title of the "world's largest palace" is both difficult to award and controversial, as different countries use different standards to claim that their palace is the largest in the world. The title of world's largest palace by area enclosed within the palace's fortified walls is held by China's Forbidden City complex in Beijing, which covers an area of 728,000 square metres (180 acres). The 980 buildings of the Forbidden City have a combined floor space of 1,614,600 square feet (150,001 m2) and contain 9,999 rooms (the ancient Chinese believed the god Yù Huáng had 10,000 rooms in his pa…

Brazil has a high level of urbanization with 87.8% of the population residing in urban and metropolitan areas. The criteria used by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) in determining whether households are urban or rural, however, are based on political divisions, not on the developed environment. Its most populous city is São Paulo. The country currently has 5,571 cities, with 5,569 municipalities plus the capital (Brasília) and the Island of Fernando de Noronha. With two exceptions, the state capitals are all the largest cities in their respective states: Florianópolis, the capital of Santa Catarina is its second-largest city after Joinville, while Vitória is only th…

This article lists the largest human settlements in the world (by population) over time, as estimated by historians, from 7000 BC when the largest human settlement was a proto-city in the ancient Near East with a population of about 1,000–2,000 people, to the year 2000 when the largest human settlement was Tokyo with 26 million. Rome, Jiankang and Chang'an may have been the first cities to have 1,000,000 people, as early as the 1st century or as late as the 8th century. Later cities that might have reached 1 million include Luoyang, Kaifeng, Hangzhou, Beijing and Edo. There is a wide agreement that London was the first city to reach 2 million and New York was the first to reach 10 million.…

Real-time impacts of air pollution on the health, well-being, and daily life of children and young people in Delhi and Dhaka.. Air pollution is a major global health threat, with children and young people (CYP) among the most vulnerable. Delhi (India) and Dhaka (Bangladesh) are two of the world's most polluted cities, with persistently high levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). This study aimed to generate CYP-centered evidence on the real-time impacts of air pollution in these cities by comparing health, well-being, and daily activities during periods of high air pollution and good air quality, while also capturing CYP's ideas for air quality management. A cross-sectional, real-time d…

The world's largest cities under climate change and their adaptive capacity to rising heat.. We quantify future urban heat exposure and adaptation capacity for the 1563 largest global cities, for the first time globally integrating climate projections, urban morphology, and economic capacity. We use high-resolution mean annual temperature (MAT) projections under SSP1-2.6, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5. These are combined with Local Climate Zone (LCZ) profiles and downscaled socioeconomic data, evaluated consistently within morphological city boundaries. With this framework, we identify cities projected to exceed a 29 °C MAT threshold by 2071-2100. The number of threshold-exceeding cities is projec…
