A wind turbine is a device that converts the kinetic energy of wind into electrical energy. As of 2024, hundreds of thousands of large turbines, in installations known as wind farms, were generating over 1,136 gigawatts of power, with 117 GW added each year. Wind turbines are an increasingly important source of intermittent renewable energy, and are used in many countries to lower energy costs and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. One study claimed that, as of 2009, wind had the "lowest relative greenhouse gas emissions, the least water consumption demands and the most favorable social impacts" compared to photovoltaic, hydro, geothermal, coal and gas energy sources. Wind turbines are manufa…

A Comparative Review of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Designs: Savonius Rotor vs. Darrieus Rotor. This paper reviews and analyzes three types of vertical-axis wind rotors: the classic Savonius, spiral Savonius, and Darrieus designs. Using numerical modeling methods, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), their aerodynamic characteristics, power output, and efficiency under different operating conditions are examined. Key parameters such as lift, drag, torque, and power coefficient are compared to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each rotor. Results highlight that the Darrieus rotor demonstrates the highest efficiency at higher wind speeds due to lift-based operation, while the s…

The Darrieus wind turbine is a type of vertical-axis wind turbine used to generate electricity from wind energy. The turbine consists of a number of curved aerofoil blades mounted on a rotating shaft or framework. The curvature of the blades allows the blade to be stressed only in tension at high rotating speeds. There are several closely related wind turbines that use straight blades. This design of the turbine was patented by Georges Jean Marie Darrieus, a French aeronautical engineer; filing for the patent was October 1, 1926. There are major difficulties in protecting the Darrieus turbine from extreme wind conditions and in making it self-starting.

Recent Advances in the Analysis of Functional and Structural Polymer Composites for Wind Turbines.. Achieving the full potential of wind energy in the global renewable transition depends critically on enhancing the performance and reliability of polymer composite components. This review synthesizes recent advances from 2022 to 2025, including the development of next-generation hybrid composites and the application of high-fidelity computational methods-finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and fluid-structure interaction (FSI)-to optimize structural integrity and aerodynamic performance. It also explores the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in…

Design and Performance Analysis of Giromill Vertical Axis Wind Turbine. Vertical axis wind turbine has been conceived as one of the best candidates for converting untapped kinetic energy of turbulent and unsteady airstream into electricity. Intelligible data on detailed analysis of performance of such a useful turbine is still scarcely found in the vast world of scientific literature. The report entitled “Design and performance analysis of Giromill Vertical Axis Wind Turbine” attempts to analyze performance of the VAWT at different tip speed ratios (TSR), for different number of blades, at different velocities and blade pitch angles. The Double Multiple Steam Tube model was used to find the…

The environmental impact of electricity generation from wind power is minor when compared to that of fossil fuel power. Wind power consumes no fuel, and emits no air pollution, unlike fossil fuels. Wind turbines have some of the lowest global warming potential per unit of electricity generated: far less greenhouse gas is emitted than for the average unit of electricity, so wind power helps limit climate change. Emissions from production of a turbine are recouped in less than a year of operation, as it replaces gas or coal power. Onshore (on-land) wind farms can have a significant visual impact and impact on the landscape. Due to a very low surface power density and spacing requirements, win…

Floating offshore wind involves one or more offshore wind turbines mounted on a floating structure that allows the turbine to generate electricity in water depths where fixed-foundation turbines are not technically/economically feasible. Floating wind farms have the potential to significantly increase the sea area available for offshore wind farms, especially in countries with limited shallow waters, such as Spain, Portugal, Japan, France and the United States' West Coast, and countries with few remaining viable shallow-water sites (like the United Kingdom). Locating wind farms further offshore can also reduce visual pollution, provide better accommodation for fishing and shipping lanes, an…

Energy Conversion Strategies for Wind Energy System: Electrical, Mechanical and Material Aspects.. Currently, about 22% of global electricity is being supplemented by different renewable sources. Wind energy is one of the most abundant forms of renewable energy available in the atmospheric environment due to different air-currents spread over the troposphere and stratosphere. The demand of modern wind energy conversion system (WECS) has increased to achieve a suitable alternate renewable energy source. In this paper, after a brief introduction, the classification of WECS is reviewed with attractive illustrations. The various mechanical materials and electrical components of WECS are discuss…

Optimizing vertical-axis wind turbine designs: A comparative CFD analysis of savonius, darrieus, and savonius-darrieus configurations. This study aims to evaluate the performance of vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) with three different configurations, including Savonius, Darrieus, and a Savonius-Darrieus hybrid wind turbine, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The methodology involves 3D geometry modeling, simulation parameter setup, meshing, and post-simulation analysis using SolidWorks 2022 software. The simulation results indicate that the Savonius turbine achieves the highest power coefficient (Cp) and torque coefficient (Ct) among the three designs, with a maximum…

The Turby is a brand of vertical-axis Darrieus wind turbine. The three vertical aerofoil blades have a helical twist of 60 degrees, similar to Gorlov's water turbines. The turbine consists of three vertical symmetrical airfoil blades, each having a helical twist. The helical feature spreads the torque evenly over the entire revolution, thus preventing the destructive pulsations of the straight-bladed giromill (Darrieus turbine). The wind pushes each blade around on both the windward and leeward sides of the turbine. As with a Darrieus turbine, theoretically, there is no torque on a stationary turbine, due to symmetry of the turbine and of the blades. Starting is achieved by operating the ge…
