The Teuchitlán culture was one of several related cultures in West Mexico during the Late Formative to Classic period (350 BCE to 450/500 CE). Situated in the Tequila Valleys of Jalisco, the Teuchitlán culture shared in the tradition of burying some of their dead in shaft and chamber tombs. Archaeological work from the past few decades has demonstrated that West Mexico was not occupied by one homogeneous culture, historically referred to as the shaft tomb tradition, that stretched from Nayarit, Jalisco, and Colima. Instead, West Mexico was composed of multiple cultures with several distinct commonalities. The Teuchitlán culture is an archaeologically defined culture named after the town of…

The Western Mexico shaft tomb tradition refers to a set of interlocked cultural traits found in the western Mexican states of Jalisco, Nayarit, and, to a lesser extent, Colima to its south, roughly dating to the period between 300 BCE and 400 CE, although there is not wide agreement on this end date. Nearly all of the artifacts associated with this shaft tomb tradition have been discovered by looters and are without provenance, making dating problematic. The first major undisturbed shaft tomb associated with the tradition was not discovered until 1993 at Huitzilapa, Jalisco. Originally regarded as of Purépecha origin, contemporary with the Aztecs, it became apparent in the middle of the 20t…

What the Teuchitlán Tradition Is, and What the Teuchitlán Tradition Is Not. The Teuchitlán Tradition of Jalisco, Mexico is one of Mesoamerica’s earliest complex societies, but one that has not escaped from a rigid neo-evolutionary description. While this phenomenon has been variously described as a state-like society, a segmentary state, or a chiefdom, archaeologists continue to investigate its socio-political and economic structure. This chapter maintains that this lacuna can be partially filled if researchers focus on political strategies rather than political “types.” This chapter, therefore, addresses the segmentary state model as it has been applied to the Teuchitlán Tradition, but rat…

Ixtlán del Rio is an archaeological site located in the Ixtlán del Rio municipality, on the south west region of the Mexican state of Nayarit. It is also known as "Los Toriles" and contains the only vestiges of the western cultures in Nayarit. The presence of prehispanic vestiges in the form of petroglyphs are registered in five areas, the most important are "El Terrero", "Sayulapa" and "El Veladero", which depict sgraffiti lines and representations of abstract figures, such as spirals with rays. Of the traditional shaft tombs, five large concentration areas have been identified, containing human bone remains; domestic pottery ollas, comales and cantaros (pitchers)]; as well as sculpture ty…

The Archaeological Record. This chapter elaborates the data and results of the explorations conducted in the Garbhanga Reserve Forest. The area has been intensively surveyed for the location of potential archaeological sites and the collection of ethnographic data in order to draw direct historical analogies. An ‘area-approach’ study has been conducted in order to formulate a general model for archaeological site structure, locations, geomorphic situations, and site formation processes that can be used for archaeological study in the hilly landscape of Northeast India. Present-day agricultural implements have been analysed and compared with Neolithic implements in order to reconstruct ancie…

Cuneiform system of writing as ancient civilizations value. This section of the monograph examines the preconditions for the emergence of the first writings, the oldest of which is the cuneiform writing system, invented by the ancient Sumerians, which became a catalyst in the formation of key values in ancient civilizations. The etymological versions of the word civilization are commented and it is substantiated that its internal form is based on the feature reflected in the word civis "citizen" and its numerous genetic derivatives in different languages, including the English equivalent city. The conclusions of historians, archeologists and culturologists have been reaffirmed. The first ci…

Writing upon System—Instituting Culture. The acting out of liberalism’s politics of blame helped to configure a new public space—a space other than the overtly political—in which to adjudicate claims about what parts of The System worked and what did not, what was of lasting value and what needed to be reformed. Those deliberations became the domain of “culture”—a term first used in its modern sense in Britain in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Once culture entered the West’s conceptual vocabulary, every group had one—in fact, every group still has to have one. Culture enacts the formal structure of system semantically as an imperative: parts (can and should) fit togethe…
