Place attachment is the emotional bond between person and place, and one way of describing the relationship between people and spatial settings. It is highly influenced by an individual and their personal experiences. There is a considerable amount of research dedicated to defining what makes a place "meaningful" enough for place attachment to occur. Schroeder (1991) notably discussed the difference between "meaning" and "preference," defining meaning as "the thoughts, feelings, memories and interpretations evoked by a landscape" and preference as "the degree of liking for one landscape compared to another." Place attachment is one aspect of a more complex and multidimensional "sense of pla…

The term sense of place refers to a multidimensional, complex construct used to characterize the relationship between people and spatial settings. It is a characteristic that some geographic places have and some do not, while to others it is a feeling or perception held by people (not by the place itself). It is often used in relation to those characteristics that make a place special or unique, as well as to those that foster a sense of authentic human attachment and belonging. Others, such as geographer Yi-Fu Tuan, have pointed to senses of place that are not "positive", such as fear. Some students and educators engage in "place-based education" in order to improve their "sense(s) of plac…

Affective resonance and place bonds: the roles of empathy and place attachment for pro-environmental behavior.. As environmental pollution intensifies and ecological challenges become more pronounced, fostering pro-environmental behavior (PEB) is increasingly important for sustainable urban development. Although prior studies have linked environmental perception to environmental behavior, the emotional mechanisms underlying this relationship remain insufficiently explored, especially the joint roles of multiple pathways. This study examines how landscape perception is associated with pro-environmental behavior through empathy and place attachment. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 4…

Exploring the influence of locality on stakeholder behavioral intentions in industrial heritage tourism from a sense of place perspective.. This study advances the Cognitive-Affective-Conative (CAC) model by conceptualizing a novel framework that integrates stakeholders’ local perception, sense of place, and behavioral intentions in industrial heritage tourism. Using Zigong Salt Farm, China, as an empirical case, we investigate three critical questions: (1) How do stakeholders’ local perceptions influence their behavioral intentions? (2) What role does sense of place play in mediating this relationship? (3) How do these mechanisms differ across stakeholder groups? By employing multi-group s…

Spatial traces of trauma: changes in home perception in young individuals after the twin earthquakes.. This study examines how the meaning of "home" changed for young individuals residing in Malatya after the twin earthquakes centered on Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023. Designed as a phenomenological study, the research explores how perceptions of home shifted across spatial, emotional, and social dimensions before and after the disaster using a thematic analysis. The findings show that, before the earthquake, home was associated with comfort, trust, belonging, and sharing. After the earthquake, these meanings were replaced by anxiety, fear, uncertainty, loneliness, and loss. Home was no…

Methods Based on a sample of 1,360 urban youths aged 18-40, a cross-sectional questionnaire survey method was conducted. The model was empirical…

The role of cultural memory and place attachment in designing cultural heritage tourism.. Cultural heritage tourism increasingly aims to provide not only recreation but also cultural learning, identity formation, and immersive engagement. This study examines how cultural memory, place attachment, and Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) constructs jointly relate to visitors' experiences and design-oriented insights at Sanhe Ancient Town, China. We develop and empirically examine a Cultural-Affective-Behavioral Intention model that links three cultural-memory pathways to place attachment, TPB components, and an overall cultural heritage tourism experience index. Cross-sectional survey data from…
