The Eurasian goshawk (; Astur gentilis) is a species of medium-large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, a family which also includes other extant diurnal raptors, such as eagles, buzzards and harriers. It was formerly placed in the genus Accipiter. It is a widespread species that inhabits many of the temperate parts of Eurasia. Except in a small portion of southern Asia, it is the only species of "goshawk" in its range and it is thus often referred to, both officially and unofficially, as simply goshawk. It is mainly resident, but birds from colder regions migrate south for the winter. As of 2023, goshawks found in North America are no longer considered to be conspecific, but are now…

Goshawk may refer to several species of birds of prey in the family Accipitridae: Palearctic Eurasian goshawk, Astur gentilis, often referred to simply as the goshawk, since it is the only goshawk found in much of its range (in Europe and Asia). Nearctic American goshawk, Astur atricapillus, often referred to simply as the goshawk, since it is the only goshawk found in much of its range (in North America). Afrotropical African goshawk, Aerospiza tachiro Red-chested goshawk, Aerospiza toussenelii Henst's goshawk, Astur henstii Pale chanting goshawk, Melierax canorus Dark chanting goshawk, Melierax metabates Eastern chanting goshawk, Melierax poliopterus Gabar goshawk, Micronisus gabar Little…

The Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), also known as the northern sparrowhawk or simply the sparrowhawk, is a small bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. Adult male Eurasian sparrowhawks have bluish grey upperparts and orange-barred underparts; females and juveniles are brown above with brown barring below. The female is up to 25% larger than the male – one of the greatest size differences between the sexes in any bird species. Though it is a predator which specialises in catching woodland birds, the Eurasian sparrowhawk can be found in any habitat and often hunts garden birds in towns and cities. Males tend to take smaller birds, including tits, finches and sparrows; females catch…

Foraging habitat selection of the Eurasian Goshawk in forest landscape. Forest characteristics influence species at macrohabitat and microhabitat levels, but the mechanisms of these associations are still poorly understood. We used GPS-tracking to identify key ecological links shaping the foraging habitat selection of the Eurasian Goshawks (Astur gentilis) in forests and thereby evaluated the potential of the species to indicate high conservation-value forests. We tracked 25 Goshawks for up to six years in a 5300 km² study area in Estonia (north-eastern Europe) and followed the Resource Selection Function approach to detect seasonal and sex-specific variations in habitat selection, using a…

Beavers on the selection-drift seesaw: imprints of the past and present-day processes on the MHC genes variability in the Eurasian beaver. Abstract MHC genes form an essential part of adaptive immunity. However, MHC studies in wild organisms pose a challenge due to the large number of alleles and frequent loci duplications. The low diversity and non-duplicated nature of the Eurasian beaver ( Castor fiber ) MHC loci provide an opportunity to understand the processes acting on MHC gene variability using a simplified framework. The Eurasian beaver undergone a severe bottleneck culminating at the at the beginning of the 20th century, that fragmented the former species continuous range. The bott…

Toxic load at the top of the food chain: Eurasian Lynx exposed to anticoagulant rodenticides in Switzerland.. Wild mammals are widely exposed to anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs). This was demonstrated for both rodent predators and carnivores eating mainly large prey such as wolf or Mountain lion. To date, only little information is available on the exposure of the Eurasian lynx to ARs, a top predator endangered in Western Europe. Here, we monitored the liver concentrations of ARs in 123 Eurasian lynxes collected during 2014-2022 in Switzerland, a country that hosts one of the main populations in this part of its range. Relations between AR concentrations and health indicators like iron defi…

The Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) is a species of passerine bird in the family Corvidae. It has pinkish brown plumage with a black stripe on each side of a whitish throat, a bright blue panel on the upper wing and a black tail. The Eurasian jay is a woodland bird that occurs over a vast region from western Europe and north-west Africa to the Indian subcontinent and farther to the eastern seaboard of Asia and down into south-east Asia. Across the vast Species distribution, several distinct racial forms have evolved which look different from each other, especially when comparing forms at the extremes of its range.

The American goshawk (Astur atricapillus) is a species of raptor in the family Accipitridae. It was first described by Alexander Wilson in 1812. The American goshawk was previously considered conspecific with the Eurasian goshawk but was assigned to a separate species in 2023 based on differences in morphology, vocalizations, and genetic divergence. It was formerly placed in the genus Accipiter. It is mainly resident, but birds from colder regions migrate south for the winter. In North America, migratory goshawks are often seen migrating south along mountain ridge tops at nearly any time of the fall depending on latitude.
