Concrete is the most widely used material in existence and is behind only water as the planet's most-consumed resource.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
A cement is a binder used for construction that sets, hardens, and adheres to other materials to bind them together. Cement is seldom used on its own, but rather to bind sand and gravel (aggregate) together. Cement mixed with fine aggregate produces mortar for masonry, or with sand and gravel, produces concrete. Concrete is the most widely used material in existence and is behind only water as the planet's most-consumed resource. Cements used in construction are usually inorganic, often lime- or calcium silicate-based, and are either hydraulic or less commonly non-hydraulic, depending on the ability of the cement to set in the presence of water (see hydraulic and non-hydraulic lime plaster). Hydraulic cements such as Portland cement set and become adhesive through a chemical reaction between the dry ingredients and water. The chemical reaction results in mineral hydrates that are not very water-soluble. This allows setting in wet conditions or under water and further protects the hardened material from chemical attack. The chemical process for hydraulic cement was found by ancient Romans who used volcanic ash (pozzolana) with added lime (calcium oxide). Non-hydraulic cement does n…

Effects of Sand Type and Alkali Equivalent on Drying Shrinkage and Microstructure of Seawater-Sea Sand Alkali-Activated Slag Concrete.. The use of seawater and sea sand for the preparation of alkali-activated concretes plays an important role in reducing carbon emissions and alleviating resource scarcity. However, both alkali-activated concretes and products made from seawater and sea sand tend to exhibit significant drying shrinkage. Therefore, this study investigates the effect of the addition of seawater and sea sand on the basic properties and drying shrinkage properties of alkali-activated concretes, and regulates the properties of seawater and sea sand alkali-activated slag (SSAS) con…

Synergistic effects of fly ash and graphene oxide composites at high temperatures and prediction using ANN and RSM approach.. Fly ash (FA) is a consequence of burning coal and is widely used in construction because of its pozzolanic qualities, which increase the strength and longevity of materials. Graphene oxide (GO) is a functionalized version of graphene with low electrical conductivity, high mechanical strength, and a large surface area. By examining the behavior of fly ash and GO composites at high temperatures, new materials with improved mechanical and functional qualities that are appropriate for a range of industrial uses can be created. By improving the material quality of cement…

The Industrial Revolution, sometimes called the First Industrial Revolution in contrast to the subsequent Second Industrial Revolution, was a transitional period of the global economy toward more widespread, efficient and stable manufacturing processes, succeeding the Second Agricultural Revolution. Beginning in Great Britain around 1760, the Industrial Revolution had spread to continental Europe and the United States by about 1840. Economic historians agree that the onset of the Industrial Revolution is the most important event in human history, comparable only to the adoption of agriculture for material advancement. This transition included going from hand production methods to machines;…
