The Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star (or T-Bird) is a subsonic jet trainer designed and produced by the American aircraft manufacturer Lockheed. Originally designated TP-80C/TF-80C at an early stage of its development, the T-33 was derived from the Lockheed P-80/F-80 jet fighter by lengthening the fuselage and adding a second seat. The T-33A conducted its maiden flight on 22 March 1948 and was introduced as an advanced trainer with the United States Air Force (USAF) shortly thereafter. It quickly proved popular with other operators, multiple variants were flown by the United States Navy, including the TO-2, TV-2 (later redesignated as T-33B), and the Lockheed T2V SeaStar (a carrier-capable derivative). A total of 6,557 T-33s were produced: 5,691 aircraft were completed by Lockheed, while a further 210 were built under licence by Kawasaki and 656 by Canadair (as the Canadair T-33AN/CT-133 Silver Star). While the majority of T-33s were unarmed, some were fitted with a pair of machine guns for gunnery training. In addition to their use as a trainer, some services opted to deploy the T-33 into frontline combat on occasion. The Cuban Air Force used the type during the Bay of Pigs Invasion, while the Indonesian Air Force opted to rearm its T-33 to perform counter-insurgency strikes in East Timor. Various private operators also flew the type, Boeing frequently used a pair of T-33s as chas…

Beyer’s Final Years, 1940–44. This chapter looks at Beyer's final years. The summer of 1940 was busy for Beyer. She taught piano at a number of schools and private homes around the greater New York area, and the families for whom she taught were central to her social life. She also spent much of July house-sitting for the family of her gifted ten-year-old piano student Roland Leitner, with whom she was particularly close and to whom she dedicated one of her last works, the Sonatina in C, in 1943. The chapter then examines Beyer's illness, which became acute in 1941. According to Bertha Reynolds, Beyer received a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in June of that year, and Reynolds later believ…

DfT Operator Limited (DFTO) is a British state-owned holding company established in 2018 as DfT OLR Holdings Limited by the Department for Transport (DfT). It was created to act as the operator of last resort for rail franchises in England, taking over train operating companies (TOC) that were either failing, or being returned to state ownership at the end of their contract terms. DFTO's role has significantly expanded since its inception, particularly following the passage of the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024, which enabled the government to assume ownership of passenger rail services without buying out private contracts. Under this framework, the government has an…

The Aérospatiale Alouette III (French pronunciation: [alwɛt], Lark; company designations SA 316 and SA 319) is a single-engine, light utility helicopter developed by French aircraft company Sud Aviation. Introduced in the early 1960s, more than 2,000 units were built during its production run that extended for six decades. The Alouette III was developed as an enlarged derivative of the earlier successful Alouette II. It shared many design elements with its predecessor while offering an extra pair of seats and other refinements. It quickly became a commercial success and was operated by a range of civil and military customers. Further variants were also developed; amongst these was a high-al…

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II and the Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed in 1940 by a team headed by James H. Kindelberger of North American Aviation (NAA) in response to a request from the British Purchasing Commission. The commission approached NAA to build Curtiss P-40 fighters under license for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Rather than build an old design from another company, NAA proposed the design and production of a more modern fighter. The prototype NA-73X airframe was completed on 9 September 1940, 102 days after contract signing, achieving its first flight o…
