A snuff film, snuff movie, or snuff video is a type of film, oftentimes defined as being produced for profit or financial gain, that shows scenes of actual homicide committed or orchestrated by the filmmakers. The concept of snuff films became known to the general public during the 1970s, when an urban legend alleged that a clandestine industry was producing such films for profit. The rumor was amplified in 1976 by the release of a film called Snuff, which capitalized on the legend through a disingenuous marketing campaign. However, that film, like others on the topic, relied on special effects to simulate murder.

Snuff is a 1976 splatter film directed by Michael Findlay and Horacio Fredriksson. Originally an exploitation film loosely based on the 1969 murders committed by the Manson Family, it is most notorious for being falsely marketed as if it were an actual snuff film. The controversy about the film was deliberately manufactured to attract publicity: it prompted an investigation by the New York County District Attorney, who determined that the murder shown in the film was fake. This picture contributed to the urban legend of snuff films, although the concept did not originate with it.

The Creation of Snuff. Although the myth of the snuff movie did not begin with the release of the film Snuff, the film’s existence certainly helped consolidate the belief that somewhere, at some time, someone was killed on camera, in an attack that was as much about the sexual gratification of the film’s intended audience as it was about the commercial rewards for those producing the film. This chapter explores the emergence of the myth, tracing production of The Slaughter, the film that became the basis for the film Snuff, and its subsequent shelving and revival in 1976. It considers the initially stilted reception that the film received on its theatrical release, but how a series of prote…

Roy Radin (November 13, 1949 – last seen May 13, 1983, remains found June 10, 1983) was an American show business promoter who packaged vaudeville shows and oldies music nostalgia tours in the 1970s and early 1980s. He was probably best known for his attempts to help finance the film The Cotton Club (1984), and as the subsequent victim of a murder-for-hire at age 33. The trial in which four people were sentenced related to Radin's killing became known as "The Cotton Club Murder." The story of Radin's murder became the subject of a book, Bad Company: Drugs, Hollywood and the Cotton Club Murder.

The Authenticity of Snuff. While Snuff presented an array of problems for the distributors in the US, it never received a theatrical release in the UK. It would be six years before the film would finally find its way to the British market on home video. When it did, the film would find itself at the centre of another controversy. Amidst threats of prosecution the distributor claims that they never released the film, though the film did find its way to market in two versions - a version that incorporates the logo of the company and that looks like an official release, and one that does not. While in the wider public consciousness the debate surrounding Snuff relates explicitly to the authent…

Psychedelics are a subclass of hallucinogenic drugs whose primary effect is to trigger non-ordinary mental states (known as psychedelic experiences or "trips") and a perceived "expansion of consciousness". Also referred to as classic hallucinogens or serotonergic hallucinogens, the term psychedelic is sometimes used more broadly to include various other types of hallucinogens as well, such as those which are atypical or adjacent to psychedelia like ketamine and MDMA, respectively. They are widely illegal to sell, possess, or to prescribe; but are nevertheless part of the global illegal drug trade. Classic psychedelics generally cause specific psychological, visual, and auditory changes, and…
