The lordship of Port-Royal was a seigneury in New France. It was located within the present-day counties of Annapolis and Digby and was centred around the historic town of Port-Royal, Acadia, now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia (Canada) - it was established in 1604 for Jean de Poutrincourt. As the earliest land grant in New France, the seigneury holds particular historical significance in the development of French colonial presence in North America.

Port Royal (1605–1713) was a historic settlement based around the upper Annapolis Basin in Nova Scotia, Canada, and the predecessor of the modern town of Annapolis Royal. Port Royal was the first successful attempt by Europeans to establish a permanent settlement in what is today known as Canada and was a critical step in the establishment of New France. It was the first permanent base of exploration for Samuel de Champlain, who would later found Quebec in 1608. It was also where Louis Hébert pioneered many European agricultural practices in the New World, including viticulture, arboriculture and cereal farming, before resettling at Quebec in 1617. For most of its existence, it was the capi…

Acadia (; French: Acadie) was a colony of New France in northeastern North America which included parts of what are now the Maritime provinces, the Gaspé Peninsula and Maine to the Kennebec River. Settlers primarily came from the southwestern regions of France, including Poitou-Charentes and the Aquitaine region (now known as Nouvelle-Aquitaine), as well as Poitou and Anjou. The territory was inhabited by various First Nations of the Wabanaki Confederacy who referred to the region as Dawnland. The first capital of Acadia was established in 1605 as Port-Royal. Soon after, English forces of Captain Argall, an English ship's captain employed by the Virginia Company of London attacked and burne…

Annapolis Royal is a town in and the county seat of Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Originally established by the French as Port Royal in 1605, the community is historically significant as one of the oldest European settlements in North America. Its founding predates the English settlement at Jamestown (1607), the French settlement at Quebec City (1608), and the Pilgrims' arrival at Plymouth (1620). Renamed as Annapolis Royal in honour of Queen Anne following the Siege of Port Royal in 1710, the town served as capital of Acadia and subsequently Nova Scotia, until the capital was transferred to Halifax in 1749. While the original 1605 French settlement was centred at the nearby Habita…

The English invasion of Acadia was a 1654 incursion into the French colony of Acadia spurred on in part from an aborted attempt to invade New Netherland as a consequence of the First Anglo-Dutch War. While preparations were being made in New England for an incursion into New Netherland, the expeditions leader Robert Sedgwick received word that the war had ended. However, Sedgwick's orders also stipulated that if time permitted that he could take over other territories of the French. The casus belli was in retaliation for French privateers on maritime commerce, as promoted by Charles II and Prince Rupert. With a mix of both English Soldiers, New England militia, and a small flotilla, Sedgwic…

Terre-Neuve (French pronunciation: [tɛʁ nœv] , "Newfoundland") was a colony in New France that existed from 1655 to 1713, and which consisted of the southern portion of Newfoundland island (the northern portion being claimed by England). The most, and sometimes only, populated region was Placentia, called "Plaisance" in French. Because of Placentia's geographic position, its main economic activity was fishing, and the settlement could serve as a pit stop for ships traveling to and from France and other New France colonies like Canada or Acadia. Terre-Neuve ceased to exist in 1713, when France evacuated its settlers and transplanted them to Cape Breton. But, France regained the Saint Pierre…

It extended from Newfoundland to the Canadian Prairies and from Hudson…
