Sex tourism is the practice of traveling to foreign countries, often in the Global South, with the intention of engaging in paid sexual activity or relationships. The World Tourism Organization of the United Nations has acknowledged that this industry is organized both within and outside the structured laws and networks created by them. Sex tourism is commonly regarded as a transnational challenge, as it can be seen to target marginalised demographics in developing nations, such as countries in the Americas or Southeast Asia. The chief ethical concerns arise from: the economic gap between sex solicitor and sex worker, the sexual trafficking of victims, potential exploitation of minors, and…

Developing an Economy of Sex. This chapter connects the social and economic history of tourism in the Dominican Republic and Haiti with its impact on masculinity, gender identity, and heterosexual performance. Elizabeth Manley's analysis builds on recent research in anthropology that views sex work as contributing substantially to conflicts of gender relations and changing gender norms. Manley analyzes how these relate to the political economy and development.

Transnational Romances and Sex Tourism in Chochueca’s Strategy, by Rita Indiana Hernández; “Emoticons,” by Aurora Arias; and “Heading South,” by Dany Laferrière. Elena Valdez analyzes transactional, heterosexual romance as an allegory of national and transnational formations in her chapter on contemporary Dominican literature and Haitian literature. Rita Indiana, Aurora Arias, and Dany Laferrière write about sex-worker protagonists who, Valdez argues, find inclusion within the nation through the sexual economy provided by tourism. These works explore sex tourism and representations thereof, along with gender relations.

FOSTA: A Transnational Disaster Especially for Marginalized Sex Workers. The Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) has caused immeasurable economic harm and compromises workers' safety and harm reduction practices. The law has had the most harmful effects on the most marginal sex workers—people of color, transgender and non-binary people, people with disabilities, and working-class sex workers. Further, while FOSTA is a U.S. law its harms reverberate worldwide. Empirical data already demonstrates the damages of FOSTA to sex workers. With draft bills proposing to study the law (S.3165 - SAFE SEX Workers Study Act), and pending legal challenges, scholars continuing to gather data can help…

Female sex tourism is sex tourism by women who travel intending to engage in sexual activities with one or more marginalized individuals or groups, including male sex workers. Female sex tourists may seek aspects of the sexual relationship not typically shared by male sex tourists, such as the exploitation of romance and intimacy among the disadvantaged group. The incidence of female sex tourism is lower than male sex tourism, and the low number of female sex tourists makes it difficult to research this phenomenon, which has been described as "poorly understood". Female sex tourism occurs in diverse regions of the world. Africa, the Caribbean, and southern Europe appear to be preferred dest…

Prostitution in Thailand is not itself illegal, but public solicitation for prostitution is prohibited if it is carried out "openly and shamelessly" or "causes nuisance to the public". Due to police corruption and an economic reliance on prostitution dating back to the Vietnam War, it remains a significant presence in the country. It results from poverty, low levels of education and a lack of employment in rural areas. Prostitutes mostly come from the northeastern (Isan) region of Thailand, from ethnic minorities or from neighbouring countries, especially Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos. In 2019, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) estimated the total population of sex worke…

The People's Republic of China (PRC) is a country of origin, destination, and transit for human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation and slavery. Sex trafficking victims in the country are from all ethnic groups in China and foreigners. Chinese citizens have been sex trafficked to the various provinces of China, as well as other countries and different continents. Illegal organizations often lure Chinese women abroad under the guise of legitimate work in other countries. Once these women arrive in that country, they are forced into prostitution and commercial sexual exploitation. Some of the women trafficked from China to Thailand and Malaysia are from ethnic minorities like t…

Gay men are male homosexuals. Historic terminology for gay men has included inverts and uranians. Gay men continue to face significant discrimination in large parts of the world, particularly in parts of Asia and Africa. In the Western world, many gay men still experience discrimination in their daily lives, though some openly gay men have reached national success and prominence, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and heads of state or government such as Edgars Rinkēvičs (President of Latvia since 2023) and Scott Bessent (United States Secretary of the Treasury since 2025). The word gay is recommended by LGBTQ groups and style guides to describe all people exclusively attracted to members of the…
