The New Yorker Life of Hannah Arendt’s Mind. This chapter illustrates how, in the annals of The New Yorker , the ‘Reporter at Large’ feature has been central, often dealing with major subjects of truly global significance, and occasionally taking up the entire magazine itself. Yet although each of the essays included in the feature transformed entire fields of inquiry, few have matched the provocative impact of Hannah Arendt's series of five features concerning ‘Eichmann in Jerusalem’. Her essays, when published in book form, carried the subtitle ‘the banality of evil’ that made them infamous on a broader, more global scale than the more local disturbances among New York intellectuals that…

Sylvia Plath and ‘The Blessed Glossy New Yorker’. This chapter examines the making of Sylvia Plath in the context of The New Yorker , as well as her sense of her own materiality, or immateriality, as a writer in that context. In Jacqueline Rose's positioning of Plath in the terrain of contemporary periodicals, The New Yorker figures as the most desirable destination for her writing, even though her work appears more frequently in other periodicals such as the Ladies ' Home Journal , Mademoiselle , and Seventeen . Crime rates in New York City have been recorded since at least the 1800s. The highest crime totals were recorded in the late 1980s and early 1990s as the crack epidemic surged, and then declined continuously from around 1990 throughout the present day. As of 2023, New York City has significantly lower rates of gun violence than many other large cities. Its 2023 homicide rate of 4.1 per 100,000 residents compares favorably to the rate in the United States as a whole (5.6 per 100,000), and rates in much more violent cities such as St. Louis (53.9 per 100,000 residents), and New Orleans (51.3 per 100,000). During the 1990s, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) adopted CompStat, broken wi…

Outliers: The Story of Success is a non-fiction book written by Canadian writer Malcolm Gladwell and published by Little, Brown and Company on November 18, 2008. In Outliers, Gladwell examines the factors that contribute to high levels of success. To support his thesis, he examines why the majority of Canadian ice hockey players are born in the first few months of the calendar year, how Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates achieved his extreme wealth, how the Beatles became one of the most successful musical acts in human history, how two people with exceptional intelligence—Christopher Langan and J. Robert Oppenheimer—end up with such vastly different fortunes, how Joseph Flom built Skadden, Ar…
