Beaver Island is an island in Lake Michigan in the U.S. state of Michigan. At 55.8 mi2 (145 km2), it is the largest island in Lake Michigan and the third largest island in Michigan after Isle Royale and Drummond Island. The island is located approximately 32 miles (51 km) from the city of Charlevoix. Beaver Island had a total population of 616 at the 2020 census. Beaver Island is part of Charlevoix County. From 1848 to 1856, Beaver Island was home to a uniquely American political and religious experiment, a Mormon theocracy and monarchy ruled by King James Strang, who unsuccessfully challenged Brigham Young for the post-Joseph Smith leadership of Mormonism. Despite failing to gain a majorit…

The following is a list of islands of Michigan. Michigan has the second longest coastline of any state after Alaska. Being bordered by four of the five Great Lakes—Erie, Huron, Michigan, and Superior—Michigan also has 64,980 inland lakes and ponds, as well as innumerable rivers, that may contain their own islands included in this list. The majority of the islands are within the Great Lakes. Other islands can also be found within other waterways of the Great Lake system, including Lake St. Clair, St. Clair River, Detroit River, and St. Marys River. The largest of all the islands is Isle Royale in Lake Superior, which, in addition to its waters and other surrounding islands, is organized as I…

The following is a list of Michigan state game and wildlife areas found throughout the U.S. state of Michigan. The state has a system of publicly owned lands managed primarily for wildlife conservation, wildlife observation, recreational activities, and hunting. Some areas provide opportunities for camping, hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing, bird watching, bicycling, boating, and off-road vehicle trails. Meteotsunami Events and Hydrologic Response in an Isolated Wetland: Beaver Island in Lake Michigan, USA. Meteotsunamis are both a well-known and poorly understood phenomenon. In particular, the influence of and disturbance by meteotsunami on coastal wetlands is largely unknown. This paper documents a case illustrating how water levels in an isolated wetland, specifically an incipient foredune/swale complex, in northern Lake Michigan responded to a meteotsunami event. We identified potential meteotsunami influence on wetland water levels through slope-break analysis, verified the presence of meteotsunami waves at surrounding lake water level gauge stations with wavelet analysis, analyzed bot…

Lake Michigan–Huron (also Huron–Michigan) is the body of water combining Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, which are joined through the 5-mile-wide (8.0 km), 295-foot-deep (90 m), open-water Straits of Mackinac. Huron and Michigan are hydrologically a single lake because the flow of water through the straits keeps their water levels in overall equilibrium. Although the flow is generally eastward from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron, the water moves in either direction depending on local conditions. Combined, Lake Michigan–Huron is the largest freshwater lake by area in the world. Lake Superior is larger than either individually, so it is counted as the largest of the Great Lakes when Lake Michigan…

Following are two lists of terrestrial lakes that have surface areas of more than approximately 673,000 square kilometres (1,200 mi2), ranked by area, excluding reservoirs and lagoons. The area of some lakes can vary over time, either seasonally or from year to year. This is especially true of salt lakes in arid climates. This list therefore excludes seasonal lakes such as Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre (maximum area 9,500 km2, 3,700 sq mi), Mar Chiquita Lake (Córdoba) (maximum area 6,000 km2, 2,300 sq mi), Chott el Djerid (up to 7,000 km2, 2,700 sq mi), Lake Torrens (maximum area 5,745 km2, 2,218 sq mi) and Great Salt Lake (maximum area, 1988, 8,500 km2, 3,300 sq mi). The list is divided in two: al…

The Great Lakes islands consist of about 35,000 islands in the Great Lakes, a series of interconnected freshwater lakes on the Canada–United States border. The islands were created by uneven glacial activity in the Great Lakes Basin. About 80% of the islands are located along the east side of Georgian Bay on the Canadian side of Lake Huron. These form the Thirty Thousand Islands, the world's largest freshwater archipelago. Many more islands are to the west of Georgian Bay, including Manitoulin Island, the world's largest lake island.
