Decoding of fine hand motor control for kinematic acupuncture needling manipulation.. Manual acupuncture depends on precise thumb-index finger coordination, yet the biomechanical principles governing this dexterity remain unresolved. Here, we establish a non-contact, video-based platform integrating marker-labeled motion capture with nonlinear dynamic and multi-modal coupling analyses to decode fine finger coordination across standardized training, animal models, and clinical observation. Tracking eight anatomical joints reveals an asymmetric motor architecture: the distal index finger acts as a temporal pacemaker with high rhythmic stability, whereas the distal thumb functions as an amplit…

The Arterial Supply of the Thumb, First Web and Index Finger and its Surgical Application. A detailed examination of twenty cadaver hands has been carried out in order to elucidate the arterial blood supply of the thumb, first web, and index finger, relating this to revascularization, replantation and possible flaps in that area. The vessels are described in turn, and it is demonstrated that the terms “princeps pollicis” and “arteria radialis indicis” are misnomers. The results of the dissections are compared to those of others and the differences recorded.

Giving someone the (middle) finger, also known as flipping the bird or flipping someone off, is an obscene hand gesture. The gesture communicates moderate to extreme contempt, and is roughly equivalent in meaning to "fuck you", "fuck off", "go fuck yourself", "shove it up your ass/arse" or "up yours". It is performed by showing the back of a hand that has only the middle finger extended upwards, though in some locales, the thumb is extended. Extending the finger is considered a symbol of contempt in several cultures, especially in the Western world. Many cultures use similar gestures to display their disrespect, although others use them to express pointing without intentional disrespect. Th…

The first finger is an ambiguous term in the English language due to two competing finger numbering systems that can be used. It might refer to either the thumb or the index finger, depending on the context. Consequently, also the terms second finger, third finger and fourth finger depend on the numbering system used in the context. Instead, the fifth finger will exclusively refer to the pinky, (also called the little finger), since the term is only used in the five-finger system.

Use of a Medial Femoral Condyle Free Flap for Metacarpal Reconstruction of Type IIIC Congenital Thumb Hypoplasia.. This is a case report of a 14-year-old girl with a Blauth Type IIIc hypoplastic thumb who underwent metacarpal reconstruction with a medial femoral condyle flap to preserve a five-digit hand. At the patient's 9-month follow-up, imaging demonstrated complete bone healing at both the first metacarpal recipient site and the donor site. At 17 months after surgery, the patient is satisfied with the appearance and improved function as she now has a stable post with a small amount of thumb abduction and adduction, with minimal donor site morbidity. The patient has elected not to under…

Finger binary is a system for counting and displaying binary numbers on the fingers of either or both hands. Each finger represents one binary digit or bit. This allows counting from zero to 31 using the fingers of one hand, or 1023 using both: that is, up to 25−1 or 210−1 respectively. Modern computers typically store values as some whole number of 8-bit bytes, making the fingers of both hands together equivalent to 11⁄4 bytes of storage‍—‍‌in contrast to less than half a byte when using ten fingers to count up to 10.

The OK gesture, OK sign or ring gesture is a gesture performed by joining the thumb and index finger in a circle, and holding the other fingers straight or relaxed away from the palm. Commonly used by scuba divers, it signifies "I am OK" or "Are you OK?" when underwater. In most English-speaking countries it denotes approval, agreement, and that all is well or "okay". In other contexts or cultures, similar gestures may have different meanings including those that are negative, offensive, financial, numerical, devotional, political, or purely linguistic.
