Academic publishing is the subfield of publishing which distributes academic research and scholarship. Most academic work is published in academic journal articles, books or theses. The part of academic written output that is not formally published but merely printed up or posted on the Internet is often called "grey literature". Most scientific and scholarly journals, and many academic and scholarly books, though not all, are based on some form of peer review or editorial refereeing to qualify texts for publication. Peer review quality and selectivity standards vary greatly from journal to journal, publisher to publisher, and field to field. Most established academic disciplines have their own journals and other outlets for publication, although many academic journals are somewhat interdisciplinary, and publish work from several distinct fields or subfields. There is also a tendency for existing journals to divide into specialized sections as the field itself becomes more specialized. Along with the variation in review and publication procedures, the kinds of publications that are accepted as contributions to knowledge or research differ greatly among fields and subfields. In the sciences, the desire for statistically significant results leads to publication bias. Academic publishing is undergoing major changes as it makes the transition from the print to the electronic forma…

Many mathematical problems have been stated but not yet solved. These problems come from many areas of mathematics, such as theoretical physics, computer science, algebra, analysis, combinatorics, algebraic, differential, discrete and Euclidean geometries, graph theory, group theory, mathematical logic, number theory, set theory, Ramsey theory, dynamical systems, and partial differential equations. Some problems belong to more than one discipline and are studied using techniques from different areas. Prizes are often awarded for the solution to a long-standing problem, and some lists of unsolved problems, such as the Millennium Prize Problems, receive considerable attention. This list is a…

SocArXiv is an online paper server for the social sciences founded by sociologist Philip N. Cohen in partnership with the non-profit Center for Open Science. It is an open archive based on the ArXiv preprint server model used for the natural sciences, mathematics, and computer science. The site describes itself as an "open archive of the social sciences, [which] provides a free, non-profit, open access platform for social scientists to upload working papers, preprints, and published papers, with the option to link data and code." It also hosts papers in the areas of education and law. The database was launched in 2016, shortly after the purchase of the Social Science Research Network by Els…

arXiv (pronounced as "archive"—the X represents the Greek letter chi ⟨χ⟩) is an independent, open-access repository of electronic preprints and postprints (known as e-prints) approved for posting after moderation, but not peer reviewed. It consists of scientific papers in the fields of mathematics, physics, astronomy, electrical engineering, computer science, quantitative biology, statistics, mathematical finance, and economics, which can be accessed online. In many fields of mathematics and physics, almost all scientific papers are self-archived on the arXiv repository before publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Some publishers also grant permission for authors to archive the peer-revie…

Mathematics is a field of knowledge concerned with abstract concepts such as numbers, geometric shapes, sets, functions, and probabilities. It uses logical reasoning and proof to study and establish their properties, often expressed as theorems, formulas, and equations. Mathematics is widely used to model and solve problems in science, engineering, technology, economics, and everyday life. There are many areas of mathematics, including number theory (the study of integers and their properties), algebra (the study of operations and the structures they form), geometry (the study of shapes and spaces that contain them), analysis (the quantitative study of approximation and convergence), and se…

On 8 September 2026, artificial intelligence company OpenAI claimed a solution to the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem with a smooth external force. However, approximately 12 hours before OpenAI's announcement, mathematician Tristan Buckmaster made a statement on behalf of himself and partly Levent Alpöge, claiming that their recent advances on Euler equations (a special case of Navier–Stokes), reported in the same post, were leaked to OpenAI a few days earlier and may have inspired OpenAI's prompts for the agents in the process that led to the alleged solution. OpenAI denied such direct use of their work, claiming "significant" differences in proof methods in the Euler case.…

Terence Chi-Shen Tao (Chinese: 陶哲轩; pinyin: Táo Zhéxuān; born 17 July 1975) is an Australian-American mathematician and professor of mathematics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was awarded the Fields Medal in 2006 for his contributions to partial differential equations, combinatorics, harmonic analysis, and additive number theory. Among his best-known results is the Green–Tao theorem, proved with Ben Green, which states that the prime numbers contain arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Tao was born to Chinese immigrant parents and raised in Adelaide, South Australia. After earning his doctorate in mathematics from Princeton University and joining the faculty at…

Quantifying community evolution in temporal networks.. When we detect communities in temporal networks it is important to ask questions about how they change over time. Adjusted mutual information (AMI) has been used to measure the similarity of communities when the nodes on a network do not change. We propose two extensions, namely, Union-Adjusted Mutual Information (UAMI) and Intersection-Adjusted Mutual Information (IAMI). UAMI and IAMI evaluate the similarities of community structures when nodes are added or removed. Experiments show that these methods are effective in dealing with temporal networks with the changes in the set of nodes, and can capture the dynamic evolution of community…
