Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) occur at frequencies ranging from approximately 20–100 kHz. They are emitted by animals such as bats and rodents, and have been extensively studied in rats and mice. As opposed to sonic vocalizations, ultrasonic vocalizations cannot be detected by the human ear. USVs serve as social signals, and are categorized according to their frequency. Different categories of USVs are elicited in response to different situations and varying affective states. The behavioural functions of USVs vary as a rat or mouse pup reaches the juvenile/adult stage of their development. The brain mechanisms behind calling behaviour have also been studied, and some studies have used pharmacological manipulation.

Odorrana graminea, the large odorous frog, inhabits fast-flowing streams in elevated mountainous regions of Southern China and Northern Indochina. It is one of 56 species in the genus Odorrana. Male O. graminea are noted for their ultrasonic call characteristics and are one of three frog species able to detect ultrasonic frequencies (>20 kHz), likely evolved to facilitate communication amidst noisy streams and waterfalls. Studies on O. graminea courtship vocalizations suggest female preference for increased proportion of nonlinear vocal phenomena (NLP).

High-yawning male rats are more sexually motivated when exposed to sexually receptive female rats in a multichoice sexual paradigm.. During mating, several sensory cues are involved in the sexual interaction process, among which the emission of 50 kHz ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) plays a key role. We have established two sublines from Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats whose spontaneous yawning frequency differs: high-yawning (HY) with a mean of 20 yawns/h and low-yawning (LY) with a mean of only 2 yawns/h. The HY male rats had more spontaneous penile erections, and when they mated with ovariectomized females primed by sequential administration of estradiol benzoate followed by progesterone for 44…

Ultrasonic communication of potential danger in a lagomorph species, the Daurian pika (Ochotona dauurica). Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) were not previously described for pikas. This study describes ultrasonic calls, produced by Daurian pikas Ochotona dauurica when disturbed by a potential threat (standing researcher or a small chair with mounted recording device) in the vicinity of the burrow entrances of their native colonies. The USVs of pikas were always produced as separate calls, followed by intervals of up to a few minutes. The USVs were never produced in regular series. Frequency range of 80% of USVs had fundamental and peak frequencies from 31.0 to 37.5 kHz. All USVs had a flat f…

Anticipatory Food-Reward Elicitation of Appetitive Ultrasonic Vocalizations in Laboratory Rats and Mice.. Ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in laboratory rats and mice provide a valuable model for investigating vocal function, affective behavior, and the underlying neural mechanisms that drive vocalization. Many commonly used USV elicitation paradigms rely on mating or social interaction, which can introduce hormonal and behavioral confounds that complicate interpretation in studies of aging, neurodegeneration, and endocrine modulation. To address these limitations, this article describes a food-reward USV elicitation paradigm that reliably evokes appetitive 50 kHz vocalizations in anticipati…

Long-term hyperglycaemia induces qualitative and quantitative changes in rat ultrasonic vocalizations.. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is currently considered a global epidemic. Recently, the relation between diabetes and mood disorders has been established, as well as a link with altered behavioural traits, that may depend on changes in the emotional state. To further elucidate the interplay between DM and changes in the emotional state, we evaluated in long-term diabetic hyperglycaemic (HG) or in control (CTRL) male rats the emission of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), a behavioural marker that may express the emotional states of rats and their changes. Rats were exposed to a conspecific matched…

Serotonergic psychedelics and amphetamine shift male rat ultrasonic vocalizations toward call patterns associated with positively valenced states.. Psychedelics and psychostimulants produce subjective and often positive affective effects in humans. In rats, positive affective states are often associated with frequency-modulated ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs). We examined whether the hallucinogenic 2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI; 1.25-2.5 mg/kg) and LSD (0.04-0.08 mg/kg), the non-hallucinogenic lisuride (0.03 or 0.3 mg/kg) and the psychostimulant amphetamine (1 mg/kg) modulate USV emission, activity, and head-twitch response (HTR) in male Wistar rats. USVs were detected using DeepSque…

Selection on ultrasonic call rate in neonatal rats affects low frequency, but not ultrasonic, vocalizations in adults. Abstract In this experiment, we studied a rodent model selected over 57 generations for high or low rates of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) during maternal separation as pups. We investigated the influence of this breeding on the adult animals’ subsequent vocal output, comparing acoustic variables across developmental stages. We hypothesized that selection on pup USV rate would impact adult USV production without affecting lower frequency calls. Contrary to this hypothesis, we found neither number of USV calls or other acoustic variables to differ among selected adult line…
