A number of significant scientific events occurred in 2014, including the first robotic landing on a comet and the first complete stem-cell-assisted recovery from paraplegia. The year also saw a significant expansion in the worldwide use and sophistication of technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles and wearable electronics. The United Nations declared 2014 the International Year of Family Farming and Crystallography.

Philae ( or ) is a robotic European Space Agency lander that accompanied the Rosetta spacecraft until it separated to land on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, ten years and eight months after departing Earth. On 12 November 2014, Philae touched down on the comet, but it bounced when its anchoring harpoons failed to deploy and a thruster designed to hold the probe to the surface did not fire. After bouncing off the surface twice, Philae achieved the first-ever "soft" (nondestructive) landing on a comet nucleus, although the lander's final, uncontrolled touchdown left it in a non-optimal location and orientation. Philae transmitted images and data back to earth for about 64 hours. Despite the…

67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (abbreviated 67P or 67P/C–G and nicknamed "Chury") is a Jupiter-family comet. It is originally from the Kuiper belt and has an orbital period of 6.45 years as of 2012, a rotation period of approximately 12.4 hours, and a maximum velocity of 135,000 km/h (38 km/s; 84,000 mph). Churyumov–Gerasimenko is approximately 4.3 by 4.1 km (2.7 by 2.5 mi) at its longest and widest dimensions. It was first observed on photographic plates in 1969 by Soviet astronomers Klim Ivanovych Churyumov and Svetlana Ivanovna Gerasimenko, after whom it is named. It most recently came to perihelion (closest approach to the Sun) on 2 November 2021, and will next come to perihelion on 9 April…

A comprehensive survey of space robotic manipulators for on-orbit servicing.. On-Orbit Servicing (OOS) robots are transforming space exploration by enabling vital maintenance and repair of spacecraft directly in space. However, achieving precise and safe manipulation in microgravity necessitates overcoming significant challenges. This survey delves into four crucial areas essential for successful OOS manipulation: object state estimation, motion planning, and feedback control. Techniques from traditional vision to advanced X-ray and neural network methods are explored for object state estimation. Strategies for fuel-optimized trajectories, docking maneuvers, and collision avoidance are exam…

Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury at T12 Causing Complete Paraplegia for 12-Years Duration Treated with Autologous Telomerase Positive Stem Cells. A 36-year-old paraplegic female presented to the clinic for bi-monthly pain management below thoracic level, T12. She was absent of cutaneous sensation below level of T12, absent of bladder/rectum function, absent genital function, and could not move around without the use of a wheelchair. She displayed anxiety, depression, and decreased feeling of self-worth. Her intense pain was due to a traumatic spinal cord crush injury from a car accident 12 years previously. To date, no effective pharmacological or regenerative treatment has been developed to tr…

T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in a Young Patient With Andersen-Tawil Syndrome Successfully and Safely Treated With Intensive Chemotherapy Including Potential Precipitating Drugs: A Case Report After 3.5 Years of Follow-up.. Andersen-Tawil syndrome (ATS) is a rare, hereditary channelopathy characterized by periodic paralysis, cardiac arrhythmias, and sometimes developmental anomalies. No association with hematologic malignancies has previously been reported. We describe the case of a 27-year-old man with genetically confirmed Type 1 ATS who developed T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He was treated according to the GRAALL-2014 protocol and achieved sustained complete molecular remis…
