Cooper's hawk (Astur cooperii) is a medium-sized hawk native to the North American continent and found from southern Canada to Mexico. This species was formerly placed in the genus Accipiter. As in many birds of prey, the male is smaller than the female. The birds found east of the Mississippi River tend to be larger on average than the birds found to the west. It is easily confused with the smaller but similar sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus). The species was named in 1828 by Charles Lucien Bonaparte in honor of his friend and fellow ornithologist, William Cooper. Other common names for Cooper's hawk include: big blue darter, chicken hawk, flying cross, hen hawk, quail hawk, striker…

Age-related variation in the oral microbiome of urban Cooper's hawks (Accipiter cooperii).. Background Bird species worldwide are affected by trichomoniasis caused by the protist Trichomonas gallinae. In avivorous raptors such as Cooper's hawks (Accipiter cooperii), nestlings are more susceptible than fledglings and adults. Previous research suggested a link between oral pH and susceptibility: the oral pH of fledgling and adult hawks is more than seven times more acidic than that of nestlings. We speculated that this age-specific difference in pH would correspond to age-specific differences in the oral microbiota of Cooper's hawks. We examined the oral microbiomes of 31 healthy, wild Cooper…

Does Seasonal Variation in Agility of Avian Prey Influence Body Size of Breeding Male Cooper's Hawks? And Comments on the Putative Influence of Avivory on Reproductive Output in Cities.. Recent studies have modeled predator-prey and niche dynamics in the avivorous, forest adapted Cooper's Hawk ( Astur cooperii ) to explain its recent and rapid colonization, including high reproductive output in varied, especially urban environments across North America. We contend that such research is compromised in part because of untenable assumptions and understudied aspects of inter-population variation in the diet and foraging ecology of breeding males who predominately catch food for their young and…

Phantom of the forest or successful citizen? Analysing how Northern Goshawks (<i>Accipiter gentilis</i>) cope with the urban environment.. By 2040, roughly two-thirds of humanity are expected to live in urban areas. As cities expand, humans irreversibly transform natural ecosystems, creating both opportunities and challenges for wildlife. Here, we investigate how the Northern Goshawk ( Accipiter gentilis ) is adjusting to urban environments. We measured a variety of behavioural and ecological parameters in three urban and four rural study sites. City life appeared related to all parameters we measured. Urban female goshawks were overall 21.7 (CI 95% 5.13-130) times more likely to defend the…

Are life history events of a northern breeding population of Cooper's Hawks influenced by changing climate?. Numerous studies have demonstrated earlier timing of spring migration and egg-laying in small passerines, but documentation of such responses to recent climate change in the life histories of higher trophic feeding birds such as raptors is relatively scarce. Raptors may be particularly susceptible to possible adverse effects of climate change due to their longer generation turnover times and lower reproductive capacity, which could lead to population declines because of an inability to match reproductive timing with optimal brood rearing conditions. Conversely adaptively favorable ou…
