The Irish Wolfhound (Irish: Cú Faoil) is a breed of large sighthound that has, by its presence and substantial size, inspired literature, poetry and mythology. One of the largest of all breeds of dog, the breed is used by coursing hunters who have prized it for its ability to dispatch game caught by other, swifter sighthounds. In 1902, the Irish Wolfhound was declared the regimental mascot of the Irish Guards.

An analysis of the genomic architecture of the worldwide Irish Wolfhound dogs.. The Irish Wolfhound (IW) is a dog breed characterised by a complex demographic history and reduced population size. In this study, we combined multiple population genomic approaches to characterise the genetic structure of 96 dogs collected from 23 countries worldwide, genotyped using the Illumina CanineHD BeadChip. Analyses of effective population size (Ne), linkage disequilibrium (LD) decay, heterozygosity and principal component analysis (PCA) consistently revealed limited genetic diversity. Complementary analyses of runs of homozygosity (ROH) and integrated haplotype score (iHS) identified extended homozygou…

Pedigree structure, inbreeding, and survival analysis in an Irish Wolfhound cohort.. Background The Irish Wolfhound (IW) is a giant dog breed characterized by a relatively short lifespan, a high prevalence of heritable disorders, and extensive relatedness among lineages. Despite the recognized importance of inbreeding and population structure in purebred dogs, relatively little is known about how pedigree structure and demographic parameters influence survival patterns in large multinational IW populations. The aim of this study was to investigate pedigree structure, inbreeding, demographic parameters, and survival patterns in a multinational cohort of Irish Wolfhounds. An integrated pedigr…

Wolf hunting with dogs is a method of wolf hunting which relies on the use of hunting dogs. While any dog, especially a hound used for hunting wolves may be loosely termed a "wolfhound", several dog breeds have been specifically bred for the purpose, some of which, such as the Irish Wolfhound, have the word in their breed name.

Echocardiographic measurements in the Irish wolfhound: reference values for the breed. Out of 400 Irish wolfhounds cardiologically examined, echocardiographic measurements of 262 normal dogs were analyzed to obtain reference values for the breed. Based on regression analysis, several echocardiographic parameters showed significant linear correlation with body weight and with age, but coefficients of determination were low. Therefore, due to a high individual variability of echocardiographic measurements in adult Irish wolfhounds, the predictive value of body weight for echocardiographic measurements was clinically not relevant. Sex had no influence on echocardiographic values. For the estim…

The English Mastiff, or simply the Mastiff, is a British breed of very large dog of mastiff type. It is likely descended from the ancient Alaunt and Pugnax Britanniae, with a significant input from the Alpine Mastiff in the 19th century. Distinguished by its enormous size, massive head, short coat in a limited range of colours, and always displaying a black mask, the Mastiff is noted for its gentle and loving nature. The lineage of modern dogs can be traced back to the early 19th century, but the modern type was stabilised in the 1880s and refined since. Following a period of sharp decline, the Mastiff has increased its worldwide popularity, although it continues to be classed as a vulnerab…

The Irish Water Spaniel (Irish: An Spáinnéar Uisce) is a breed of dog that is the tallest of the spaniels. It is one of Ireland's nine native dog breeds, also known as a "bog-dog". As a common hunting dog, they were often kept by historic landowning classes along with minor gentry, who commonly hunted and shot game. Performing a wide range of skills, such as the combined duties of pointers, setters, retrievers, and spaniels, they were a good fit for people who were unable to keep a team of dogs. The breed thrives in a working environment. They often love to please their owners, hunting and retrieving game happily. They are characterized by their curly coat, a distinctive "rat tail", and web…

Delayed postoperative hemorrhage (DEPOH) in an Irish Wolfhound with the SERPINF2 c.605 T/T genotype: case description and variant prevalence across dog breeds. Introduction Delayed postoperative hemorrhage (DEPOH) is a life-threatening complication of major surgical procedures in Greyhounds affecting up to 26–30% of dogs. DEPOH has also been reported in Scottish Deerhounds, but it is unclear whether any other breeds are affected. A genetic variant (c.605 C > T) was recently discovered in the SERPINF2 gene that is currently used as a biomarker for increased risk of DEPOH. The objective of this study was to provide the first report of DEPOH occurring in association with the SERPINF2 variant i…
