Successful treatment of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in a pregnant dog: a case report.. A 2.5-year-old female Dachshund was diagnosed and treated for immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) during late-term pregnancy. The dog had been treated for a urinary infection approximately 1 week prior to presentation with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and became increasingly lethargic at home. When the dog was presented to a university teaching hospital, the dog was significantly anemic and later diagnosed with IMHA, either secondary to pregnancy or potentially associated with previous antibiotic treatment. The dog was hospitalized for 5 days and received multiple blood transfusions, immunosuppres…

Birth Weight and Early Weight Changes in Newborn Dogs: Analyzing Key Influencing Factors in Dobermann Puppies. Birthweight (BW) and early weight changes are important prognostic factors in dog neonatology, but are influenced by the breed. The present study aimed to evaluate BW and early growth in a single breed, Dobermann, and single breeding facility for a better evaluation of data and analysis of influencing factors. In 364 puppies born by elective cesarean section, the ROC curve and cut-off weight values associated with the risk for death within 15 days after birth were defined for BW and Day 1 weight (D1W). Both BW and D1W were influenced by newborn’s sex (p < 0.05), maternal age (p < 0…

Heart murmurs in puppies and adult dogs. Heart murmurs in puppies and adult dogs are common findings in first-opinion veterinary practices during routine health checks. Heart murmurs in puppies can be innocent or pathological. Differentiating between innocent and pathological heart murmurs in puppies is important as, for some congenital cardiac diseases, life-saving treatment is available if early intervention is initiated. Therefore, referral of puppies with a heart murmur to a cardiology specialist is recommended to reveal congenital heart diseases. Ideally, referral takes place before the puppy is sold to a new owner and before the puppy develops clinical signs of heart disease. Heart mu…

Endurance training-induced changes in heart rate and blood lactate concentration in puppies.. Introduction Dogs are used for various physically demanding sports and work activities, with training starting at a very young age. However, little is known about the effects of training on young puppies. This study investigated effects of a structured endurance program on changes in heart rate (HR) and blood lactate (BL) concentrations measured after a fitness field test in Labrador retriever puppies aged under six months. Methods Fifteen puppies were included: eight in the training group (TRA) and seven in the control group (C). Training group puppies followed an eight-week training program, whil…

RECOVER Guidelines: Newborn Resuscitation in Dogs and Cats. Evidence and Knowledge Gap Analysis With Treatment Recommendations.. Objective To systematically review the evidence on, to devise clinical recommendations for, and to identify critical knowledge gaps in resuscitation of newborn puppies and kittens. Design Standardized, systematic evaluation of literature pertinent to newborn resuscitation following Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology. Prioritized questions were reviewed by Evidence Evaluators, and findings were reconciled by Domain Chairs and Reassessment Campaign on Veterinary Resuscitation (RECOVER) Co-Chairs to arrive at treat…

In common with many of the expeditions of the Heroic Age, Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition (AAE) employed dog-hauled sledges as a principal means of transportation during exploration of the continent. Dog sledges could carry more weight and travel faster than man-hauled sledges; they were more reliable in the freezing temperatures than motor-sledges; and dogs had proved to be more adaptable to harsh Antarctic conditions than ponies. Mawson purchased fifty sledge dogs from Greenland and transported them to Antarctica on the expedition's ship SY Aurora. The trip was arduous for the dogs and by the time the expedition arrived in Antarctica on 8 January 1912 only 28 of the dog…
