A battery energy storage system (BESS), battery storage power station, battery energy grid storage (BEGS) or battery grid storage is a type of energy storage technology that uses a group of batteries in the grid to store electrical energy. Battery storage is the fastest responding dispatchable source of power on electric grids, and it is used to stabilise those grids, as battery storage can transition from standby to full power in under a second to deal with grid contingencies. Battery energy storage systems are generally designed to deliver their full rated power for durations ranging from 1 to 4 hours, with emerging technologies extending this to longer durations to meet evolving grid dem…

High-resolution mapping reveals a profound gap between existing rooftop solar deployment and potential in Africa.. Rooftop photovoltaics offer a flexible and scalable pathway for expanding electricity access and advancing power system transitions in Africa. However, spatially explicit tracking of rooftop photovoltaic installations at a continental scale remains a critical bottleneck, hindering efforts to characterize deployment patterns, assess regional untapped potential, and inform investment decisions. Here, we used satellite imagery and a U-Net semantic segmentation model to construct a geospatial database of rooftop photovoltaic installations across Africa. Results showed that total ro…

A Systematic Review of the Economic Feasibility of Implementing Renewable Energy Systems in European Buildings. Abstract It critically examines the economic feasibility of European building renewable energy deployment, comparing monetary performance variation by technology, region, and policy context, differences in economic outcomes defying assumptions of worldwide viability for renewable energy. Solar photovoltaic systems have superior residential performance with IRRs of more than 15% in well-designed structures, but system size makes a dramatic difference in returns with well-sized installations delivering five times the Net Present Value of conservative practices. Heat pump technologie…

Renewable energy in Tuvalu is a growing sector of the country's energy supply. Tuvalu has committed to sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable energy. This is considered possible because of the small size of the population of Tuvalu and its abundant solar energy resources due to its tropical location. It is somewhat complicated because Tuvalu consists of nine inhabited islands. The Tuvalu National Energy Policy (TNEP) was formulated in 2009, and the Energy Strategic Action Plan defines and directs current and future energy developments so that Tuvalu can achieve the ambitious target of 100% renewable energy for power generation by 2020. The program is expected to cost 20 million US…

On economic and environmental effects of expanding PV deployment in Poland.. By means of using a unique dataset and input-output (IO) techniques this paper offers a first attempt to conduct a detailed assessment of the possible macroeconomic and environmental effects generated in the national economy of Poland by installation and use of photovoltaic infrastructure. The data comes from two sources: the most recent available macroeconomic data published by the Central Statistical Office of Poland and an original dataset developed by the Energy Transition Observatory (ETO) - a strategic project run between 2023 and 2025 by AGH University of Krakow, the Ministry of Climate and Environment of Po…

Agrivoltaics can reduce political polarization and local opposition to solar energy on land.. As solar energy deployment on land intensifies, political polarization and local opposition increasingly challenge its social acceptance. We propose that agrivoltaics - a dual land-use technology that combines solar power generation with agricultural production - can help bridge ideological divides and reduce local opposition by minimizing land-use conflicts and offering additional benefits to rural communities. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a pre-registered, field-embedded experiment with a representative sample (2145 Swiss residents) just prior to a national renewable energy referendum, c…

GIS-based analysis of field margin photovoltaic potential at the landscape level in northwestern Germany.. Climate change and other factors require transformations of the agricultural sector towards sustainable land use practice. The integration of renewable energy systems, particularly photovoltaics, into agricultural and rural land-use systems receives increased attention to decarbonise resource use and consumption and to stabilise incomes and livelihoods in rural regions. This study analyses the quantitative potential of a new concept, Field Margin Photovoltaics, in north-western Lower Saxony, Germany. This concept combines crop cultivation, photovoltaics and biodiversity promotion with…

Nonparametric statistical approach to wind farm siting in Poland using GIS.. The present work examines the influence of environmental, topographical, and natural factors on the operational parameters of wind farms in Poland. Motivated by the ongoing transition to renewable energy and recent regulatory changes, the analysis utilises a comprehensive dataset of all wind farms in Poland, 2585 wind turbines. In statistical analysis, two grouping parameters were applied-wind farm area (0-5 km 2 , 5-10, 10-15, 15-20 and 25-30 km 2 ) and the power capacity of single turbines (0-1 MW, 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 MW)-to assess spatial and technical variability. A range of non-parametric statistical tests, includin…
