Mining, Urban Growth, and Agrarian Changes in the Atacama Desert: The Case of the Calama Oasis in Northern Chile. Since the mid-twentieth century, Latin American rural territories have undergone significant transformations. One of the leading causes is the expansion of large-scale operations that exploit natural resources for world market exportation with low processing. In this paper, we study the changes in agricultural activities, livestock, and land use in the Calama oasis (the Atacama Desert, northern Chile) in relation to the growth of large-scale copper mining and other chained processes (urbanization and increased demand for water resources); based on a mixed methodology combining d…

The Atacama Desert (Spanish: Desierto de Atacama [ataˈkama]) is a desert plateau on the Pacific coast of South America, stretching along a 1,600-kilometre-long (1,000-mile) strip of land in northern Chile, west of the Andes. It covers an area of 105,000 km2 (41,000 mi2), rising to 128,000 km2 (49,000 mi2) if the barren lower slopes of the Andes are included. The Atacama is the driest non-polar desert in the world and the largest fog desert on Earth. Extreme aridity results from its position between two mountain chains—the Andes and the Chilean Coast Range—of sufficient height to block moisture from both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, creating a two-sided rain shadow. The cool, north-flowi…

Metal rich cosmic spherules from Calama (Atacama Desert) and Walnumfjellet (Antarctica): a textural, chemical and isotopic comparison. Introduction. Each year, approximately 40,000 ± 20,000 metric tons of extraterrestrial material reaches Earth, primarily in the form of micrometeorites [1]. Micrometeorites form by collisions between asteroids or as the result of evaporation of comets, and derive from a variety of parent bodies, including carbonaceous and ordinary chondrites [2]. Micrometeorites sample parent bodies distinct from those of meteorites, offering a unique perspective on the origin and evolution of the Solar System. They also provide valuable insights into potential dust-related…

Inter- and intrapopulation variation in the response of tree seedlings to drought: physiological adjustments based on geographical origin, water supply and species.. Initiatives to restore natural ecosystems have had little success in arid and hyperarid ecosystems. In this context, the natural seedling establishment is particularly affected by drought patterns and climatic variability. Likewise, the effect of plant provenance on forest restoration success remains unclear, although previous studies have concluded that some seed locations might be better able to tolerate water stress. In this study, we examined the physiological mechanisms involved in the drought stress resistance of Prosopis…
