A school meal (whether it is a breakfast, lunch, or evening meal) is a meal provided to students and sometimes teachers at a school, typically in the middle or beginning of the school day. Countries around the world offer various kinds of school meal programs, and altogether, these are among the world's largest social safety nets. An estimated 380 million school children around the world receive meals (or snacks or take-home rations) at their respective schools. The extent of school feeding coverage varies from country to country, and as of 2020, the aggregate coverage rate worldwide is estimated to be 27% (and 40% specifically for primary school-age children). The objectives and benefits o…

School Meal Programs in Africa: Regional Results From the 2019 Global Survey of School Meal Programs. Introduction School meal programs operate throughout Africa, serving as a social safety net and aiming to improve children's nutrition, influence their dietary choices, and strengthen the agrifood economy through local procurement. Despite their rapid expansion in the past decade, there has been no systematic effort to comprehensively document school feeding activities across the continent. Methods Detailed information on school feeding activities in each country was captured in the Global Survey of School Meal Programs©, which launched in 2019. An invitation to participate was extended to…

Supporting the Synergy Between School Meal Programs and Food Banks to Combat Food Insecurity Among Children: A Bayesian Mindsponge Framework Analysis.. Background and aims Food banks play a major role in the food aid sector by distributing donated and purchased groceries directly to food-insecure families, which helps reduce food insecurity. On the other hand, school meal programs are implemented in many countries to combat food insecurity among school-aged children. The synergy between school meal programs and food banks has great potential to combat food insecurity among children effectively. This study aimed to examine the impacts of experts' involvement, such as nutritionists, farmers,…

Implementation of school-feeding programme and its effect on dietary adequacy among primary school children in Kisarawe district, Tanzania.. The school-age period is crucial nutritional-wise owing to its health and developmental impact. In Tanzania, 11% of school-aged children are thin, while 34% are anemic, representing a significant burden of undernutrition with a potential to have a lasting impact on educational and early onset of non-communicable diseases. This study was designed to evaluate its implementation and effects on dietary adequacy among primary-school children in Kisarawe District, Tanzania. A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 students aged 10-14 year…

A comprehensive and standardized dataset on school feeding activities worldwide: The Global Survey of School Meal Programs.. School meal programs-in which students receive meals, snacks, or take-home rations-reach over 400 million children throughout the world. They aim to address multiple objectives, most commonly to improve children's nutrition and health and to meet education goals by facilitating and incentivizing children's school attendance and learning. Yet despite their prevalence and evidence of impact, the data available on large-scale school meal programs have historically been fragmented and inconsistent, making it difficult to discern trends over time or compare school meal act…

Optimising school meals in Ghana: integrating new food and nutrient standards with aspects of affordability, cultural acceptability and environmental sustainability.. Objectives To optimise school food baskets in Ghana to meet newly proposed food and nutrition targets while considering cultural acceptability and cost. Design This was a modelling study. Data on existing school meal menus were collected from various regions to provide baseline inputs. Linear programming (LP) was used to model school meal baskets that satisfied minimum nutrient and food targets for school meals while meeting cost and acceptability constraints. Five LP models were tested, each varying in budget constraints and…

Power and entitlement: Addressing the structural drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition.. The world produces enough food for all, yet it falls short of providing a nutritionally balanced diet, and what it produces is extremely unevenly distributed, with high levels of undernourishment and obesity co-existing, often within the same countries. Policy responses have achieved only limited success because they often fail to address the underlying causes of these outcomes. Drawing on Amartya Sen's entitlement framework and adapting it by making the conditions governing conversion analytically explicit, we explain food access in terms of people's endowments and the exchange, production, and t…

Large-Scale School Meal Programs and Student Health: Evidence from Rural China. Reducing urban-rural gaps in child health is one of the most difficult challenges faced by many countries. This paper evaluates the impact of a large-scale school meal program in rural China on the health and nutritional status of compulsory education students aged 6-16. We use data from multiple rounds of the China Health and Nutrition Survey between 2004-2015 and find that program participation is, on average, associated with a higher child height-for-age. The impacts are larger among students in a better health condition but small or not significant among the most disadvantaged. We do not observe heterogeneou…

Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of school meals programmes on education, health and nutrition, social protection and agriculture in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review protocol.. Introduction Globally, school meals programmes (SMPs), otherwise referred to as school feeding programmes, are widely implemented with the aim of improving multisectoral outcomes, including education, health and nutrition, social protection and agriculture, among other cross-cutting impact areas. Despite their widespread adoption and the broad recognition of their potential benefits, evidence on their actual impact across these diverse outcomes remains limited, fragmented and often inco…
