A further five vessels are currently under construction for the fleet. Caledonian MacBrayne (Scottish Gaelic: Caledonian Mac a' Bhriuthainn), in short form CalMac, is the trade name of CalMac Ferries Ltd, the major operator of passenger and vehicle ferries to the west coast of Scotland, serving ports on the mainland and 22 of the major islands. It is a subsidiary of holding company David MacBrayne, which is owned by the Scottish Government. Its predecessor, the government owned Caledonian MacBrayne Ltd, was formed in 1973 as a ferry owner and operator. In 2006 these functions were separated to meet EU requirements for competitive tendering. The company, renamed Caledonian Maritime Assets (CMAL), continued to own the Caledonian MacBrayne fleet and assets. The c…

MV Glen Sannox is a car and passenger ferry constructed at Ferguson Marine in Port Glasgow for the Scottish Government asset company CMAL, to lease to its ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne. Entering service informally to the Isle of Arran on 12 January 2025, formally on 13 January 2025, she is the first of two dual-fuel CalMac ferries, capable of operating on either marine gas oil, or LNG which offers a marked reduction in sulphur dioxide, nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide emissions, the other being the MV Glen Rosa. The ship's name recalls an earlier Arran ferry. The ship's sea trials began in February 2024, and she was moved to Inchgreen Quay in Greenock, freeing the Newark Quay at the s…

A stock-flow cohort model of the national car fleet. Various regulatory and fiscal policy instruments are in force to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases and local pollutants emitted by private cars. The incentives operate primarily—or exclusively—on the newest generation of cars. But how fast will technological developments affecting new vehicle models penetrate into the car fleet? The speed at which the adverse effects of private car use will be mitigated through the normal vehicle renewal process, or through an accelerated one, carries considerable interest. Suitable modelling tools are needed. This paper aims to demonstrate the usefulness and flexibility of a bottom-up stock-flow mode…

British Railway Shipping 1948-1984 A Nationalised Success Story. This dissertation will look at British Railways shipping activities under the British Transport Commission (BTC) and British Railways Board British (BRB). At the time of nationalisation in 1948 the BTC took control of the extensive shipping activities of the British railway companies. The research done for this dissertation suggests the BTC was the largest operator of passenger ships in Europe in the early post-war years. Academic research in this field is very limited, indeed the whole coastal shipping scene has been somewhat neglected. What has been done suggests that the “railway ships” were outdated, inefficient and unprof…
