The New South Wales D57 class is a class of 4-8-2 steam locomotives built for the New South Wales Government Railways in Australia by Clyde Engineering and by Mort's Dock & Engineering Company in respect of the tenders. When they entered service in 1929, they represented a revolution in locomotive design, having a tractive effort 67% higher than the previous most powerful New South Wales locomotive, the 55 class.

Horsepower and Tractive Effort of Steam Locomotives (Locomotive Ratios). Abstract Cole’s Ratios, by the use of which the tractive-force curves of locomotives can be calculated and plotted, knowing certain of the locomotive dimensions, have been successfully used for the past 15 to 18 years. The Type E superheater, the feedwater heater, long-travel valve motions, and certain changes and refinements in proportion and design have tended to increase the power of steam locomotives built since 1920. The power calculated by Cole’s method does not therefore accurately represent the actual power of modern steam locomotives. In his paper the author reviews the work of Cole and others, checking it aga…

Tractive Effort of Steam Locomotives (Locomotive Ratios—II). Abstract In a paper presented before the A.S.M.E., December, 1932, the author developed constants for a new method of figuring horsepower and tractive effort of steam locomotives based on boiler evaporation and number of revolutions of the driving wheels for use in connection with modern locomotives. This method was verified on a number of locomotives, for which it gave accurate results in accordance with test data. In the present paper the author discusses the influence of the size of cylinders and shows that for locomotives with certain proportions between boiler and cylinder dimensions modifications of previously recommended fa…

A train (from Old French trahiner, from Latin trahere, "to pull, to draw") is a series of connected vehicles that run along a railway track and transport people or freight. Trains are typically pulled or pushed by locomotives (often known simply as "engines"), though some are self-propelled, such as multiple units or railcars. Passengers and cargo are carried in railroad cars, also known as wagons or carriages. Trains are designed to a certain gauge, or distance between rails. Most trains operate on steel tracks with steel wheels, the low friction of which makes them more efficient than other forms of transport. Many countries use rail transport. Trains have their roots in wagonways, which…
