A boiler explosion is a catastrophic failure of a boiler. There are two types of boiler explosions. One type is a failure of the pressure parts of the steam and water sides. There can be many different causes, such as failure of the safety valve, corrosion of critical parts of the boiler, or low water level. Corrosion along the edges of lap joints was a common cause of early boiler explosions. In steam locomotive boilers, as knowledge was gained by trial and error in early days, the explosive situations and consequent damage due to explosions were inevitable. However, improved design and maintenance markedly reduced the number of boiler explosions by the end of the 19th century. Further imp…

Oxidizing Boiler Water Chemistry for Low Pressure Steam Boilers. Abstract Low pressure boilers used for heating purposes typically are exposed to conditions that predispose them to corrosive attack by oxygen. Variable feedwater quality combined with non-uniform chemical treatment, frequently result in excessive oxygen levels being present and this can in turn lead to corrosion of heat exchange surfaces. While a number of different approaches have been tried in the past, they all suffered from a variety of shortcomings. The use of molybdate to stop oxygen corrosion in low pressure steam boilers has been proven to be both effective and extremely operator friendly. This paper will discuss both…

Management Response in British Coastal Shipping Companies to Railway Competition. This essay will examine the ways in which British coastal shipping businesses reacted to competition from railways. It is divided broadly into five sections. The first sketches the role of coastal shipping before the advent of the railways and explores the impact of steam on short-sea shipping. The second analyses the part played by the short-distance early railways, which were perceived initially as at best minor threats to coastal shipping.Indeed, many were seen as beneficial because they enhanced the flow of goods to and from ports. The third section examines the threat from the long-distance national rail line…

Ultra-Supercritical Pressure CFB Boiler Conceptual Design Study. Electric utility interest in supercritical pressure steam cycles has revived in the United States after waning in the 1980s. Since supercritical cycles yield higher plant efficiencies than subcritical plants along with a proportional reduction in traditional stack gas pollutants and CO{sub 2} release rates, the interest is to pursue even more advanced steam conditions. The advantages of supercritical (SC) and ultra supercritical (USC) pressure steam conditions have been demonstrated in the high gas temperature, high heat flux environment of large pulverized coal-fired (PC) boilers. Interest in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) c…

Evaluation of Steam Boiler Design Standards and Testing Protocols: A Historical and Technical Review. This paper presents a comprehensive historical and technical review of steam boiler design standards and testing protocols, tracing their evolution from early industrial applications to contemporary regulatory frameworks. Beginning with the catastrophic boiler explosions of the nineteenth century that prompted the formulation of the first codified safety regulations, the study examines the progressive refinement of material specifications, pressure vessel design criteria, non-destructive examination (NDE) methods, and operational safety requirements. Key international standards including th…

Sir Goldsworthy Gurney (14 February 1793 – 28 February 1875) was a British surgeon, chemist, architect, builder, lecturer and consultant. He was a prototypical British gentleman scientist and inventor of the Victorian era. Amongst many accomplishments, he developed the oxy-hydrogen blowpipe, and later applied its principles to a novel form of illumination, the Bude-Light; developed a series of early steam-powered road vehicles; and laid claim—still discussed and disputed today—to the blastpipe, a key component in the success of steam locomotives, engines, and other coal-fired systems. Events surrounding the failure of his steam vehicle enterprise gave rise to controversy in his time, with c…

The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) is an electromagnetic catapult system developed by General Atomics for the United States Navy's CATOBAR supercarriers. The system enables assisted takeoffs of carrier-based aircraft by means of a linear induction motor-based catapult rather than the steam catapults used on the earlier Forrestal-class, Kitty Hawk-class, Enterprise-class and Nimitz-class aircraft carriers. The EMALS was first installed on the USS Gerald R. Ford, the lead ship of the new Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier, c. 2015. The main advantage of the EMALS over the conventional steam catapults is that it can accelerate aircraft more smoothly and gradually, thus putti…

Pre-dreadnought battleships were sea-going battleships built from the mid- to late- 1880s to the mid-1900s. Their designs were conceived before the appearance of HMS Dreadnought in 1906 and their classification as "pre-dreadnought" is retrospectively applied. In their day, they were simply known as "battleships" or else more rank-specific terms such as "first-class battleship" and so forth. The pre-dreadnought battleships were the pre-eminent warships of their time and replaced the ironclad battleships of the 1870s and 1880s. In contrast to the diverse development of ironclads in preceding decades, the 1890s saw navies worldwide start to build battleships to a common design as dozens of shi…

A steam engine is a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam as its working fluid. The steam engine uses the force produced by steam pressure to push a piston back and forth inside a cylinder. This pushing force can be transformed by a connecting rod and crank into rotational force for work. The term "steam engine" is normally applied to reciprocating engines, although some authorities have also referred to the steam turbine and devices such as Hero's aeolipile as "steam engines". The essential feature of steam engines is that they are external combustion engines, where the working fluid is separated from the combustion products. The ideal thermodynamic cycle used to analyze th…

A safety valve is a valve that acts as a fail-safe. An example of safety valve is a pressure relief valve (PRV), which automatically releases a substance from a boiler, pressure vessel, or other system, when the pressure or temperature exceeds preset limits. Pilot-operated relief valves are a specialized type of pressure safety valve. A leak tight, lower cost, single emergency use option is a rupture disk. Safety valves were first developed for use on steam boilers during the Industrial Revolution. Early boilers operating without them were prone to explosion unless carefully operated. Vacuum safety valves (or combined pressure/vacuum safety valves) are used to prevent a tank from collapsing…
