The Amazon river dolphin (Inia geoffrensis), also known as the boto, bufeo or pink river dolphin, is a species of toothed whale endemic to South America and is classified in the family Iniidae. Three subspecies are currently recognized: I. g. geoffrensis (Amazon river dolphin), I. g. boliviensis (Bolivian river dolphin) and I. g. humboldtiana (Orinoco river dolphin). The position of the Araguaian river dolphin (I. araguaiaensis) within the clade is still unclear. The three subspecies are distributed in the Amazon basin, the upper Madeira River in Bolivia, and the Orinoco basin, respectively. The Amazon river dolphin is the largest species of river dolphin, with many adult males reaching 185…

Elucidating Sexual and Spatial Influences on the Trophic Ecology of Amazon River Dolphins (<i>Inia geoffrensis</i>) and Mercury Contamination.. The Amazon Basin hosts an immense biodiversity, including the endemic Amazon River dolphin ( Inia geoffrensis ). Dietary exposure to mercury (Hg) is one of the threats to this top predator species. This study investigated the relationship between Hg exposure, trophic position and foraging areas in I. geoffrensis . We analyzed Hg concentrations and stable carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) isotope ratios in 111 blood samples collected in different years. The Hg concentrations ranged from 23 to 582 μg/kg wet weight, while mean δ 13 C an…

Oceanic dolphins or Delphinidae are a widely distributed family of dolphins that live in the sea. Close to forty extant species are recognised. They include several big species whose common names contain "whale" rather than "dolphin", such as the Globicephalinae (round-headed whales, which include the false killer whale and pilot whale). Delphinidae is a family within the superfamily Delphinoidea, which also includes the porpoises (Phocoenidae) and the Monodontidae (beluga whale and narwhal). River dolphins are a grouping of at least three cetacean superfamilies which form a sister group to Delphinoidea. Oceanic dolphins range in size from the 1.7-metre-long (5 ft 7 in) and 50-kilogram (110…

Western Amazon Basin limits: conservation status and distribution of river dolphins (<i>Inia geoffrensis</i> and <i>Sotalia fluviatilis</i>) in Ecuador.. River dolphins ( Inia geoffrensis and Sotalia fluviatilis ) are apex predators in Ecuador's Amazon, where they face critical endangerment due to their restricted western range limit and escalating anthropogenic pressures. Despite their critical contributions to freshwater ecosystem health, comprehensive population assessments have historically been scarce. Using standardized protocols from the South American River Dolphin Initiative (SARDI), we conducted boat-based surveys spanning 972.6 km across 11 rivers, employi…

The La Plata dolphin, franciscana or toninha (Pontoporia blainvillei) is a species of river dolphin found in coastal Atlantic waters of southeastern South America. It is a member of the Inioidea group and the only one that lives in the ocean and saltwater estuaries, rather than inhabiting exclusively freshwater systems. Commercialized areas that create agricultural runoffs and industrialized zones can affect the health of the La Plata dolphin, especially in regards to their contributions of waste and pollution, which can lead to habitat degradation and poisoned food among other concerns.
