The Atacama Desert (Spanish: Desierto de Atacama [ataˈkama]) is a desert plateau on the Pacific coast of South America, stretching along a 1,600-kilometre-long (1,000-mile) strip of land in northern Chile, west of the Andes. It covers an area of 105,000 km2 (41,000 mi2), rising to 128,000 km2 (49,000 mi2) if the barren lower slopes of the Andes are included. The Atacama is the driest non-polar desert in the world and the largest fog desert on Earth. Extreme aridity results from its position between two mountain chains—the Andes and the Chilean Coast Range—of sufficient height to block moisture from both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, creating a two-sided rain shadow. The cool, north-flowi…

A new genus of Gnorimoschemini (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae, Gelechiinae) from the Atacama and Sechura deserts.. Sexually dimorphic Gnorimoschemini moths (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae, Gelechiinae) were reared from leaf mines collected on Tessaria absinthioides (Hook. & Arn.) DC. (Asteraceae) in the coastal Atacama Desert of northern Chile. Detailed examination revealed a combination of morphological characters not assignable to any known genus of the tribe, including 1) a scale tuft on the male hindwing, 2) an uncus with a triangular postero-medial projection, and 3) a U-shaped gnathos. COI sequences obtained from a male and a female showed minimal intraspecific divergence (0.6%), whereas intersp…

Community composition and spatial aggregation patterns of the endangered endemic plant Menonvillea linearifolia (Brassicaceae) in the Atacama Desert.. Menonvillea linearifolia is an endangered annual herb endemic to north-central Chile, growing on sandy coastal slopes within the Atacama Desert flowering zone. To characterise its ecological context, we surveyed the floristic composition, plant cover and spatial aggregation patterns of its associated plant community in Punta de Choros, Coquimbo Region, during a flowering desert event. Using 20 transects and 1,000 microplots, we recorded 29 vascular plant species, with a dominance of annual herbs (44.8%) and high endemism (7…
