Incidence, Prevalence, and Risk Factors of Dog Bites in Pediatric Populations: Protocol for a Systematic Review.. Background Dog bites represent a significant global public health concern, particularly among children and adolescents. Approximately 330,000 emergency department visits occur annually in the United States alone due to dog-bite injuries, with pediatric populations bearing a disproportionate burden. Despite this, existing systematic reviews remain fragmented, focusing on isolated aspects such as breed-specific risk, educational interventions, or legislative measures, without comprehensively addressing the global incidence, prevalence, and multifactorial risk profile in pediatric…

India has the highest number of attacks by stray dogs in the world. India has 36% of all rabies deaths in the world. There have been incidents where small babies are mauled to death by stray dogs in India. India also has the largest number of stray dogs in the world, along with the highest cases of rabies deaths. Many rabies deaths are unreported. In compliance with Animal Birth Control rules, 2001, stray dogs may not be purposefully killed as it is unconstitutional. They have to be vaccinated and sterilized. Municipalities lack the money to sterilize stray dogs due to misuse and mismanagement of the granted funds for this purpose. Many Indians believe that stray dog attacks are common in t…

Long-term evaluation of a zoned catch-neuter-vaccinate-release program integrating owner engagement and buffer zone strategies for humane dog population management and rabies control in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.. Background and aim Catch-neuter-vaccinate-release (CNVR) is recognized as a humane and sustainable strategy for controlling free-roaming dog populations and eliminating dog-mediated rabies. However, long-term evaluations incorporating spatial planning and community participation remain scarce. This study assessed a five-year zoned CNVR program integrating owner engagement and a peripheral buffer zone strategy in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, a religious heritage city affected by frequent…

The German Shepherd, also known in Britain as an Alsatian, is a German breed of working dog of medium to large size. It is characterized by its intelligent and obedient nature. It was developed in Germany from 1899 by Max von Stephanitz, using various traditional German herding dogs, and gained international recognition after the end of the First World War. It was bred as a herding dog, for herding sheep, but has since been used in many other types of work, including disability assistance, search-and-rescue, police work, and warfare. It is commonly kept as a companion dog, and is among the most frequently registered breeds world-wide.

A free-ranging dog is a dog that is not confined to a yard or house. Free-ranging dogs include street dogs, village dogs, stray dogs, feral dogs, etc., and may be owned or unowned. The global dog population is estimated to be 700–900 million, of which approximately 75% are classified as free-ranging. Free-ranging dogs are common in developing countries. It is estimated that there are about 62 million free-ranging dogs in India. In Western countries free-ranging dogs are rare; in Europe they are primarily found in parts of Eastern Europe, and, to a lesser extent, in parts of Southern Europe. Free-ranging dogs survive by adapting to their environment, including scavenging through uncollected…

The caramelo (Portuguese: [kaɾaˈmɛlu] ) is a mixed-breed, caramel‑colored dog type traditionally associated with a free-ranging lifestyle in Latin America. In addition to the honey-colored coat, the designation "vira-lata caramelo" (Brazilian Portuguese for 'caramel trashcan-tipper') also refers to the fact that the lack of pedigree is a major feature of its notability. Mutts have long been found on the streets of Latin American countries. As of 2026, Mexico's population of stray dogs has been estimated to be near 30 million. In Brazil, the estimated population of stray dogs has increased one order of magnitude from 3.9 million in 2018 to 20 million in 2026. Of all the free-ranging dogs liv…

Time Series and Pattern of Dog Bites and Rabies in the Ashanti Region, Ghana, 2009-2019: A Call for Inter-Sectoral Collaboration in the Fight Against Rabies.. Dog-mediated human rabies is a vaccine-preventable neglected zoonotic disease, causing thousands of deaths every year across Africa and Asia. Information to generate the appropriate attention and action to avert human rabies is lacking due to disaggregation of available data. This study sought to understand the burden of dog-mediated rabies transmission and response patterns in Ghana's Ashanti Region, and analyzed dog-bite surveillance, rabies laboratory investigations, and hospital visitation data from 2009 to 2019. A total of 442 bi…

Epidemiology, risk factors, and prevention of animal bites injuries in Slovakia: an 18-year epidemiological analysis.. Background Animal bite injuries, predominantly from dogs, rank among the top 15 causes of nonfatal injuries globally. Since 2006, negligible number of cases of rabies were declared in Slovakia, lacks comprehensive national data on bite demographics and outcomes. Methods This Epidemiological study analysed 14,978 patient records (2006-2023) obtained from Slovak public health databases. Statistical analyses, including chi-square tests and linear regression, were used to evaluate trends in bite incidence, vaccination coverage, and associated risk factors. Results Between 2006…
