The 1994 Northridge earthquake affected Greater Los Angeles, California, United States, on January 17, 1994, at 04:30:55 PST. The epicenter of the moment magnitude 6.7 (Mw) blind thrust earthquake was beneath the San Fernando Valley. The shock lasted approximately 8 seconds and achieved a peak ground acceleration of over 1.7 g. It is the largest recorded earthquake in the area's history, slightly surpassing the Mw 6.6 1971 San Fernando earthquake. Shaking was felt as far away as San Diego, California; Turlock, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Richfield, Utah; Phoenix, Arizona; and Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. Sixty people died and more than 9,000 were injured. In addition, property dama…

CALCULATION ANALYSIS TO DETERMINE THE LARGEST EARTHQUAKE AREA AT NORTH SUMATERA USING J48 DESICION TREE METHOD. Northern Sumatera is subduction zone region which sustain a high magnitude earthquake. It caused Sumatera region encounter two plates, viz the Eurasian plate and the Indo-Australian. They are reinforced on active Semangko fault. Because of this both plates are convergent, and formed by subduction zone, it resulting in high earthquake frequency content. Then, it area traversed three fault : Fault Renun, Fault Toru and Fault Angkola through kilometre 475, which the source and the propagation of earthquake wave from Firma terrain. The impact of the earthquake at Northern Sumatera reg…

Long-term monitoring of self-potential and resistivity in Kyungju area where the largest earthquake occurred in Korea.. <p>Long-term monitoring of self-potential (SP) and electrical resistivity was conducted to examine the correlation between seismic activity and changes of these geo-electrical components in the Kyeongju area where the largest earthquake occurred in Korea. Resistivity monitoring was carried out in 2018 and 2019 but the data was not continuos occasionally because of some accidents in the field. The longest monitoring of resistivity was about 120 days and the resistivity data were acquired in 5 minutes interval. The transmitted electrical source current has 1 Hz square period…

On 6 February 2023, two earthquakes devastated southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. The first earthquake occurred at 04:17:35 TRT (01:17:35 UTC), measuring moment magnitude (Mw) of 7.8. The epicenter was 37 km (23 mi) west–northwest of Gaziantep. This strike-slip shock achieved a Mercalli intensity of XII (Extreme) around the epicenter and in Antakya. It was followed by a Mw 7.7 earthquake, at 13:24:49 TRT (10:24:49 UTC). This earthquake was centered 95 km (59 mi) north-northeast from the first. There was widespread severe damage and tens of thousands of fatalities. The Mw 7.8 earthquake is the largest to strike Turkey since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake of the same ma…

The 1946 Vancouver Island earthquake struck Vancouver Island on the coast of British Columbia, Canada, on June 23 at 10:15 a.m. with a magnitude estimated at 7.0 Ms and 7.5 Mw. The main shock epicenter occurred in the Forbidden Plateau area northwest of Courtenay. While most of the large earthquakes in the Vancouver area occur at tectonic plate boundaries, the 1946 Vancouver Island earthquake was a crustal event. Shaking was felt from Portland, Oregon, to Prince Rupert, British Columbia. This is one of the most damaging earthquakes in the history of British Columbia, but damage was restricted because there were no heavily populated areas near the epicentre, where severe shaking occurred. Th…

On 26 December 2004, at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7), a Mw 9.2–9.3 earthquake struck with its epicenter off the west coast of Aceh, in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The undersea megathrust earthquake, known in the scientific community as the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake, was caused by a rupture along the fault boundary between the Burma plate and the Indian plate, and reached a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX in some areas. The earthquake caused a massive tsunami with waves up to 30 m (100 ft) high, referred to by British and Commonwealth media as the Boxing Day tsunami, after the Boxing Day holiday, or the Asian tsunami, which devastated communities along the surrounding coasts of the Indian…

The 1882 Panama earthquake occurred on September 7 at around 03:50 (UTC-5). The earthquake measured a magnitude between 7.9 and 8.3 on the surface-wave magnitude scale, making it the largest earthquake recorded in Panamanian history. It struck the San Blas Islands and was strongly felt in the City of Colón as well as the capital of Panama City. The earthquake also produced a major tsunami that had a maximum run-up of 3 meters (9.84 ft.). In total, the earthquake killed 250 people, 75 of which were from the tsunami. The earthquake and tsunami also halted the construction of the Panama Canal by a few months.

The Northridge Blind Thrust Fault (also known as the Pico Thrust Fault) is a thrust fault that is located in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles. It is the fault that triggered the Mw 6.7 1994 Northridge earthquake which caused $13–50 billion in property damage (equivalent to 24–93 billion today) and was one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.

Digital archive of ephemerally preserved sedimentary structure in surf zone uplifted by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake.. The surf zone is a dynamic coastal area characterising the physical environment of sandy beaches. However, direct, non-disturbing field observations of the highly variable sedimentary history of surf zones have been almost impossible in the past. The lack of on-site observations has limited our understanding of the morphological behaviour and inherent dynamics. In contrast, surf-zone stratigraphy was uplifted onto land on a time scale of seconds at the Kaiso Coast, Japan, by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake on 1 January 2024. The structure of unsolidified sediments cover…
