Modelling the impacts of imports and non-native subspecies hybridisation in honeybees.. Human-mediated movement of organisms for agriculture and ecosystem services often results in hybridisation and introgression between populations of native and non-native species. While introgression may increase genetic diversity, it can erode unique adaptations and reduce fitness, threatening the survival of native lineages. Honeybees offer a good model with extensive records, queen trade and migratory beekeeping facilitating genetic exchange among subspecies. To explore these dynamics, we used SIMplyBee to simulate hybridisation between populations of native Apis mellifera mellifera and non-native Apis…

Cross-country comparison of ex-ante sugar tax evaluations: Evidence from the biscuit, non-alcoholic beverage, and dairy dessert markets in France, Spain, and the United Kingdom.. Background Excessive sugar consumption is associated with substantial health and economic burdens. Public policies aimed at reducing sugar intake, such as education campaigns and product labelling, have shown limited effectiveness, prompting growing interest in fiscal measures such as sugar taxes. While taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages have demonstrated reductions in consumption, evidence remains limited regarding their extension to other high-sugar products. Objective This study assesses the potential impacts of…

Expanding low-input summer soybean in China's winter wheat belt: climate, water and food trade-offs. Abstract Where cropland is no longer expanding, few measures jointly reduce fertilizer N, reactive N losses, and irrigation withdrawal. A legume in the summer slot of an existing rotation is one of them. For China, importing about 85% of its soybean, it is also a route to domestic supply. But when unfertilized soybean replaces maize, a season of fertilizer and irrigation is withdrawn with it. In field trials and existing model assessments the two effects are inseparable by design. Addition and substitution act on different land uses, so their outcomes cannot be inferred from one another. Her…

Reduced-crosstalk antennas for grating-lobe-free and wide-field-of-view integrated optical phased arrays.. Integrated optical phased arrays (OPAs) have emerged as a promising technology for many applications due to their ability to dynamically control free-space optical beams in a compact and non-mechanical manner. However, these integrated OPAs typically have a restricted field of view (FOV), limited by grating lobes caused by large antenna pitches that are typically necessary to reduce crosstalk between the antennas in the integrated OPA. In this work, we develop and experimentally demonstrate for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a set of integrated grating-based antennas wit…

Widespread land-use change may be caused by adaptation to climate-induced yield reductions.. Agriculture is at the center of the relationship between human societies and natural systems, acting as both a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and a sector highly sensitive to climate change. When climate change reduces agricultural yields, land-use change represents a key pathway through which human societies may adapt. Here, we coupled a climate-yield emulator with an integrated assessment model to quantify how adaptation to climate-induced yield losses reshapes the global land-use patterns. We found that adaptive responses to declining yields could substantially transform global land use…
