The food industry is a complex, global network of diverse businesses that supplies most of the food consumed by the world's population. The food industry today has become highly diversified, with manufacturing ranging from small, traditional, family-run activities that are highly labour-intensive, to large, capital-intensive and highly mechanized industrial processes. Many food industries depend almost entirely on local agriculture, animal farms, produce, and/or fishing. The food industry includes: Agriculture: raising crops, livestock, and seafood. Manufacturing: agrichemicals, agricultural construction, farm machinery and supplies, seed, etc. Food processing: preparation of fresh products…

Corporate interest groups and their implications for global food governance: mapping and analysing the global corporate influence network of the transnational ultra-processed food industry. Abstract Background A major challenge to transforming food systems to promote human health and sustainable development is the global rise in the manufacture and consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). A key driver of this dietary transition is the globalization of UPF corporations, and their organized corporate political activity (CPA) intended to counter opposition and block government regulation. UPF industry CPA and the corporate interest groups who lobby on their behalf have been well described…

Mapping corporate ties between ultra-processed food and petrochemical industries. Abstract The global expansion of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has been highly dependent on petrochemicals for agricultural inputs and single-use plastic packaging. However, despite this reliance, corporate ties between food and petrochemical industries have not been studied. Using network analysis, we explore connections between the world’s leading 30 UPF and 50 petrochemical corporations, finding a high degree of interdependence and coordination. These connections span ownership (common shareholders and subsidiaries), governance (common board members and directors) and political ties (common interest groups i…

Integrating Research, Policy and Practice to Address Antimicrobial Resistance in Aotearoa New Zealand: The NZAMRNet Initiative.. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating global challenge with significant implications for human health, agriculture and environmental sustainability in Aotearoa New Zealand. As for many complex 'wicked problems', addressing AMR requires coordinated, transdisciplinary approaches that integrate research, policy and practice; however, current efforts remain fragmented, limiting national impact and readiness to respond to this complex threat. Here, we describe the establishment of the Aotearoa New Zealand Antimicrobial Resistance Network (NZAMRNet), a nationa…

The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) is a private organization that works as a "coalition of action" from the Consumer Goods Forum (CGF) and brings together retailers and brand owners (manufacturers) from across the CGF membership. The GFSI operates under multi-stakeholder governance, with the objective to create "an extended food safety community to oversee food safety standards for businesses and help provide access to safe food for people everywhere". GFSI's work in benchmarking and harmonization aims to foster mutual acceptance of GFSI-recognized certification programs across the industry, with the ambition to enable a "once certified, accepted everywhere" approach.

Decentralization of Finance and Global Businesses. Abstract Decentralization of finance is usually regarded as a revolution in just the field of finance. However, thanks to chain structures (e.g. blockchain) ranging from supply chain management to enterprise resource management systems, decentralization gradually reforms all aspects of global business simultaneously. Cryptocurrency markets and decentralization of network structures may be considered as two independent chaotic processes by an uninformed observer; however, almost every step of this transformation process can be associated with a certain innovative motivation which was designed for a specific purpose. In this chapter, the impl…

Safety Over Cost: Prioritizing Cold Chain Performance to Mitigate Post-Harvest Food Loss in Tropical Emerging Markets. Abstract Temperature integrity in tropical developing markets is a serious operational problem due to high ambient temperatures and humidity, which lead to an exponential increase in post-harvest food loss and spoilage risks. While conventional supply chain paradigms prioritize short-term cost minimization, this study aims to establish an empirical multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework to prioritize operational mechanisms that safeguard food integrity in tropical cold chain ecosystems. Grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Supply Chain Risk Management (SCR…
