Sasa is a genus of bamboo and part of the grass family (Poaceae). Sasa are characterized as being dwarf species of bamboo, typically under 2m in height, producing many thin culms from a highly branched and running root stock with only one branch per node. For their size, they have relatively large, wide leaves leading to the common name broadleaf bamboo. All species are native to Asia, with the majority are native to Japan. Some species of Sasa have the northern-most distribution of any bamboo species and are native to Sakhalin in the Russian Far East and the nearby Kuril islands. The genus name Sasa is derived from the Japanese name sasa (笹 / ササ) meaning bamboo grass, used to distinguish S…

Development of microsatellite markers for the dwarf bamboo species <i>Sasa cernua</i> and <i>Sasa kurilensis</i> (Poaceae) in northern Japan. Abstract Ten polymorphic microsatellite markers were isolated from the dwarf bamboo species Sasa cernua and Sasa kurilensis . The applicability of these markers was confirmed by genotyping of open‐pollinated seeds and leaf samples from natural populations. Genotypes of seeds from each culm shared at least one allele from the maternal parent without contradiction. All 10 loci were polymorphic in S. cernua with 2–15 alleles (average H E = 0.532). Eight loci were polymorphic in S. kurilensis with 2–10 alleles (average H E = 0.532). These markers will be…

Pediobius sasae (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae), a new species from galls on dwarf bamboo (Sasa nipponica) in Japan. Pediobius sasae sp. nov. (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is described from Japan. This new species belongs to the “eubius-complex” of species and is compared to the species of that group. It was reared from galls induced by an unidentified gall midge of the tribe Oligotrophini (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). The galls are formed on stems of dwarf bamboo (Sasa nipponica). Pediobius sasae is a solitary primary parasitoid on the gall midge, but possibly also acts as a secondary parasitoid of another parasitoid reared from the same host, an unidentified species of Torymus (Hymenoptera: Torymidae).

Competitive ability of dwarf bamboo ( <scp> <i>Sasa borealis</i> </scp> ) through long‐term clonal growth in mixed dwarf bamboo communities in the understory of a temperate deciduous forest. Abstract We investigated the clonal competition of three co‐occurring dwarf bamboo species, Sasa borealis , Sasa nipponica , and Sasaella ramosa , for 32 years in an old‐growth beech forest in central Japan. A study plot (10 m × 24 m) was established to examine the culm dynamics of these species. Sasa borealis had a competitive advantage over the other species. It invaded the other bamboo populations at a rate of 0.84–0.89 m/y from 1988 to 2020, while S . nipponica invaded at a rate of 0.17 m/y until 20…

Effect of light availability on the carbon gain of beech ( <i>Fagus crenata</i> ) seedlings with reference to the density of dwarf bamboo ( <i>Sasa kurilensis</i> ) in an understory of Japan Sea type beech forest. Abstract In the understory of Japan Sea type beech ( Fagus crenata Bl.) forests, a beech seedling bank persists at the forest floor where the seedlings are shaded by dwarf bamboo ( Sasa kurilensis Makino et Shibata). The culm density of dwarf bamboo is reduced by shading from the overstory. To determine the effect of the dwarf bamboo on the photosynthetic productivity of beech seedlings, we evaluated the leaf carbon gain of the beech seedlings with respect to the spatiotemporal va…

Roles of dominant understory <scp> <i>Sasa</i> </scp> bamboo in carbon and nitrogen dynamics following canopy tree removal in a cool‐temperate forest in northern <scp>J</scp> apan. Abstract To clarify the role of dense understory vegetation in the stand structure, and in carbon ( C ) and nitrogen ( N ) dynamics of forest ecosystems with various conditions of overstory trees, we: (i) quantified the above‐ and below‐ground biomasses of understory dwarf bamboo ( Sasa senanensis ) at the old canopy‐gap area and the closed‐canopy area and compared the stand‐level biomasses of S. senanensis with that of overstory trees; (ii) determined the N leaching, soil respiration rates, fine‐root dynamics, p…
