TRAPPIST-1 (also known as 2MASS J23062928−0502285 or SPECULOOS-1) is a red dwarf star with seven known exoplanets. It lies in the constellation Aquarius approximately 40.66 light-years (12.47 pc) away from Earth. An ultra-cool dwarf, it has a surface temperature of about 2,566 K (2,290 °C; 4,160 °F). Its radius is slightly larger than Jupiter's and it has a mass of about 9% of the Sun. It is estimated to be 7.6 billion years old, making it older than the Solar System. The discovery of the star was first published in 2000. Observations in 2016 from TRAPPIST–South (Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope project) at La Silla Observatory in Chile and other telescopes led to the di…

Extraterrestrial Intelligent Life: What The Public Believes. Abstract Astrobiologists are moving purposefully towards the detection of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) through the radio and optical methods of SETI. Meanwhile, members of the public have formed their own opinions, only partially informed by science. In the United States, two thirds of all adults believe there is intelligent life beyond Earth, and a substantial minority believe we have already made contact. Opinions about the existence and nature of aliens are part of a complex landscape of beliefs that includes pseudoscience and superstition and extends to conspiracy theories. The widespread belief that unidentified flying…

Avoiding the “Great Filter”: Extraterrestrial Life and Humanity’s Future in the Universe. Our Universe is a vast, tantalizing enigma - a mystery that has aroused humankind’s innate curiosity for ages. Begging answers to questions on alien lifeforms have been thus far unfruitful, even with bounding technological advancements of recent years. Coupled with logical assumptions and calculations such as those made by Dr. Frank Drake starting in the early 1960s, evidence of life should arguably exist in abundance in our galaxy alone, yet in practice we’ve produced no clear affirmation beyond our own planet. So, where is everybody? The silence of the Universe beyond Earth reveals a pattern of both…

The Voyager Golden Records are two identical phonograph records, with one copy aboard each of the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. The records contain sounds and data to reconstruct raster scan images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form who may find them. The records are a time capsule. Although neither Voyager spacecraft is heading toward any particular star, Voyager 1 will pass within 1.6 light-years' distance of the star Gliese 445, currently in the constellation Camelopardalis, in about 40,000 years. Carl Sagan noted that "The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if t…

Extraterrestrial life, or alien life (colloquially aliens), is life that originates from another world rather than on Earth. No extraterrestrial life has yet been detected. Such life might range from simple forms such as microbes to intelligent beings, possibly bringing forth civilizations that might be far more, or far less, advanced than humans. The Drake equation speculates about the existence of sapient life elsewhere in the universe. The science of extraterrestrial life is known as astrobiology. Speculation about inhabited worlds beyond Earth dates back to antiquity. Early Christian writers, including Augustine, discussed ideas from thinkers like Democritus and Epicurus about countless…

While, due to indeterminacy and possibly free will, the future cannot be predicted with certainty, present understanding in various scientific fields allows for the prediction of some far-future events, if only in the broadest outline. These fields include astrophysics, which studies how planets and stars form, interact and die; particle physics, which has revealed how matter behaves at the smallest scales; evolutionary biology, which studies how life evolves over time; plate tectonics, which shows how continents shift over millennia; and sociology, which examines how human societies and cultures evolve. These timelines begin at the start of the 4th millennium in 3001 CE, and continue until…

The Fermi paradox is the seeming inconsistency between the lack of evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations and the apparently high likelihood of their existence. In simple terms, the Fermi paradox asks why, given the vast number of stars and potentially habitable planets in our observable universe, there is no clear evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations. The paradox is named after physicist Enrico Fermi who blurted out the question—remembered by Emil Konopinski as "But where is everybody?"—during lunchtime after the conversation had already moved on to other topics. This happened at Los Alamos in 1950 with colleagues Konopinski, Edward Teller, and Herbert York. The paradox first app…

Interstellar is a 2014 epic science fiction drama film directed by Christopher Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother, Jonathan Nolan. It features an ensemble cast led by Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, and Michael Caine. Set in a dystopian future where Earth is suffering from catastrophic blight and famine, the film follows a group of astronauts who travel through space in search of a new home for humanity. The film began development in 2006 from a treatment by producer Lynda Obst and theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, and was originally set to be directed by Steven Spielberg. Thorne served as an executive producer and scientific…

The cultural impact of extraterrestrial contact is the corpus of changes to terrestrial science, technology, religion, politics, and ecosystems resulting from contact with an extraterrestrial civilization. This concept is closely related to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), which attempts to locate intelligent life as opposed to analyzing the implications of contact with that life. The potential changes from extraterrestrial contact could vary greatly in magnitude and type, based on the extraterrestrial civilization's level of technological advancement, degree of benevolence or malevolence, and level of mutual comprehension between itself and humanity. The medium through…

Extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) refers to hypothetical beings – extraterrestrial life or more artificial beings – having the intelligence to perform similar cognitive abilities as humans. No such life has ever been verifiably observed to exist. The question of whether other inhabited worlds might exist has been debated since ancient history. The modern form of the concept emerged when the Copernican Revolution demonstrated that the Earth was a planet revolving around the Sun, and other planets were, conversely, other worlds. The question of whether other inhabited planets or moons exist was a natural consequence of this new understanding. It has become one of the most speculative questi…
