“Even more than that, men love cars”: “Car guy” memes and hegemonic masculinity. The construction of gender identities occurs through a variety of social forces, including memes widely circulated on social media. Beyond the function of internet memes as entertainment, they also promote gender-based bonding through humor in ways that encourage performative gender roles central to self-image. Decoding memes as a form of contemporary data reveals desires and fears, both conscious and unconscious, that underlie dramaturgical performances supporting hegemonic masculinity. In the case of “car guys,” car aficionados whose passion for cars is integral to their identity, memes reflect the group's as…

Discovering Real Men Care: The Emergent Masculinities of Stay-at-Home Husbands in Hong Kong.. The rising phenomenon of stay-at-home husbands (SAHHs) in Hong Kong exemplifies the evolution of masculinities in Asia. The development of emergent masculinities through SAHHs is intertwined with hybrid masculinities to expand the range of visible male roles in an Asian context. The implication of SAHHs is explored through interviews conducted with 31 middle-class SAHHs and 19 wives of SAHHs in Hong Kong. Two key findings are (1) emergent masculinities via SAHHs upend conventional gendered family roles as they become the primary caregivers for their children with notable support from their breadwin…

The history of women in the United States encompasses the lived experiences and contributions of women throughout American history. The earliest women living in what is now the United States were Native Americans. European women arrived in the 17th century and brought with them European culture and values. During the 19th century, women were primarily restricted to domestic roles in keeping with Protestant values. The campaign for women's suffrage in the United States culminated with the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920. During World War II, many women filled roles vacated by men fighting overseas. Beginning in the 1960s, the second-wave feminist movemen…

Are American Women more deprived than Men?. Abstract American men experience higher premature death than women, while women are more likely to experience poverty throughout their lifetimes. These gender inequalities are substantially different across racial groups. Based on these facts, I explore in this paper two complementary questions. First, what is the most disadvantaged gender group when combining poverty and mortality data? Second, are there racial disparities in the pattern of gender inequalities in total deprivation? This study uses the generated deprivation index, a novel indicator that aggregates poverty and mortality as components of total deprivation, to answer those questions.…

Guy Talk, Precarious Masculinity, and Men's Sexual Health: A Qualitative Content Analysis of Men's Health Magazine Covers.. The current study engages precarious masculinity as a framework to examine sexual health in magazines marketed for male audiences. Precarious masculinity is the idea that masculinity is fragile and always being challenged or questioned, particularly considering pressures to defend the social status and privilege associated with masculinity. We conducted a qualitative content analysis of the text or "coverlines" on the covers of Men's Health magazines over nearly 40 years (1986-2024; N = 333) of which only 26 (8%) covers address men's sexual health. S…

The current study uses qualitative interviews to examine the retrospective views of housing and homelessness among young adults who were homeless as children with their families. We compare their perspectives to earlier reports of…

Generation Z (or Gen Z for short), colloquially known as Zoomers, is the demographic cohort succeeding Millennials and preceding Generation Alpha. Members of Generation Z, were born between the mid-to-late 1990s and the early 2010s, with the generation typically being defined as those born from 1997 to 2012. In other words, the first wave came of age during the latter half of the second decade of the twenty-first century, a time of significant demographic change due to declining birthrates, population aging, and immigration.
