It is the only representative of the genus Rangifer.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
The reindeer or caribou (Rangifer tarandus) is a species of deer with circumpolar distribution, native to the Arctic, subarctic, tundra, boreal, and mountainous regions of Northern Europe, Siberia, and North America. It is the only representative of the genus Rangifer. More recent studies suggest the splitting of reindeer and caribou (North American terminology). "All caribou and reindeer throughout the world are considered to be the same species, but there are 7 subspecies." Reindeer occur in both migratory and sedentary populations, and their herd sizes vary greatly in different regions. The tundra subspecies are adapted for extreme cold, and some are adapted for long-distance migration. Reindeer vary greatly in size and color from the smallest, the Svalbard reindeer (R. (t.) platyrhynchus), to the largest, Osborn's caribou (R. t. osborni). Although reindeer are quite numerous, some species and subspecies are in decline and considered vulnerable. They are unique among deer (Cervidae) in that females may have antlers, although the prevalence of antlered females varies by subspecies. Reindeer are the only successfully semi-domesticated deer on a large scale in the world. Both wild and domestic reindeer (R. t. forma domesticus) have been an important source of food, clothing, and shelter for Arctic people from prehistoric times. They are still herded and hunted today. In some t…

Macro- and micro-morphologies and conservation status of Hymenorchis javanica (Orchidaceae: Aeridinae): the only representative of the genus in Malaysia. Analysis of morphological characters and conservation status were carried out for Hymenorchis javanica from Peninsular Malaysia. Morphology was studied in detail and accompanied by a botanical drawing prior to the correct identification. From most closely related Hymenorchis phitamii found in Vietnam, it differs in the lip ovate-oblong with apex acute and margins entire, and the leaves margins prominently serrulate. Based on the current IUCN criteria, we proposed H. javanica as an endangered species under the threatened category. Judging f…

A new temporary fish parasitic gnathiid isopod, Elaphognathia alcalai (Crustacea: Isopoda: Gnathiidae), from Philippine coral reefs.. Gnathiid isopods are the most prevalent and ecologically important temporary ectoparasites of coral reef fishes and are important for supporting the functional integrity of coral reefs. Through their role as parasites, gnathiids can influence community dynamics in their ecosystem. The family Gnathiidae constitutes 12 genera, including the genus Elaphognathia that can be distinguished from other genera by the deeply excavated frontal border, dramatic lengthening of the mandibles, and addition of apical cusps in adult males. There are currently 25 known species…

Lama is a genus containing the South American camelids: the wild guanaco and vicuña and the domesticated llama, alpaca, and extinct chilihueque. Before the Spanish conquest of the Americas, llamas, alpacas, and chilihueques were the only domesticated ungulates of the continent. They were kept not only for their value as beasts of burden, but also for their flesh, hides, and wool.

The Porcupine caribou is a herd or ecotype of the mainland barren-ground caribou (Rangifer arcticus arcticus, syn. R. tarandus groenlandicus), the subspecies of the reindeer or caribou found in Alaska, United States, and Yukon and the Northwest Territories, Canada. Migratory caribou herds are named after their calving grounds, in this case the Porcupine River, which runs through a large part of the range of the Porcupine herd. Though numbers fluctuate, the herd comprises about 218,000 animals (based on a July 2017 photocensus). They migrate over 1,500 mi (2,400 km) a year between their winter range and calving grounds at the Beaufort Sea, the longest land migration route of any land mammal…
