Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Mollusca is a phylum of protostomic invertebrate animals, whose members are known as molluscs or mollusks (). 86,600 extant species of molluscs are recognized, making it the second-largest animal phylum after Arthropoda. The number of additional fossil species is estimated between 60,000 and 100,000, and the proportion of undescribed extant species is very high. Many taxa remain poorly studied. Molluscs are the largest marine phylum, comprising about 23% of all the named marine organisms. They are highly diverse, not just in size and anatomical structure, but also in behavior and habitat, as numerous groups are freshwater and even terrestrial species. The phylum is typically divided into 7 or 8 taxonomic classes, of which two are entirely extinct. Cephalopod molluscs, such as squid, cuttlefish, and octopuses, are among the most neurologically advanced of all invertebrates—and either the giant squid or the colossal squid is the largest known extant invertebrate species. The gastropods (snails, slugs and abalone) are by far the most diverse class and account for 80% of the total classified molluscan species. The four most universal features defining modern molluscs are a soft body composed almost entirely of muscle, a mantle with a significant cavity used for breathing and excretion, the presence of a radula (except in bivalves), and the structure of the nervous system. Other th…

A comprehensive RNA virome from molluscan transcriptomes reveals extensive diversity and modular genome evolution.. Mollusca, the second-largest animal phylum, includes many aquaculture species used as important food resources for humans. While DNA viruses that threaten molluscan aquaculture have received much attention, molluscan RNA viromes are still understudied. Here, using a multi-stage RdRP discovery pipeline combining six-frame translation, profile-based homology search, and phylogenetic validation, 203 RNA viruses spanning five viral phyla and fifteen viral orders were identified, based on 223 molluscan metatranscriptomes covering eight classes. Phylogenetic analysis, combined with…

A comprehensive RNA virome from molluscan transcriptomes reveals extensive diversity and modular genome evolution. Mollusca is the second-largest animal phylum and an important marine food resource for humans. While DNA viruses that threaten molluscan aquaculture have received much attention, molluscan RNA viromes remain poorly explored. Here, based on 223 molluscan metatranscriptomes covering eight animal classes, we identified 80 species-level RNA viruses spanning three viral phyla and nine viral families. Phylogenetic result combined structural modeling found a major increase in the number of Pisuviricota -related lineages. Extensive modular evolution in viral genomes was observed includ…

Annelids (), also known as segmented worms, are animals that comprise the phylum Annelida (; from Latin anellus 'little ring'). The phylum contains over 22,000 extant species, including ragworms, earthworms, and leeches. The species exist in and have adapted to various ecologies – some in marine environments as distinct as tidal zones and hydrothermal vents, others in fresh water, and yet others in moist terrestrial environments. Annelids are bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic, coelomate, invertebrate organisms. They also have parapodia for locomotion. Most textbooks still use the traditional division into Polychaetes (almost all marine), Oligochaetes (which include earthworms) and Hiru…

Some adventitious species of terrestrial molluscs Central Asia. Limax flavus Linnaeus, 1758 not previously recorded in Central Asia was found in Uzbekistan. The total number of adventitious species in Central Asia is 12; six species are migrants from Asia (Caucasus); six from Europe. Nine species were found before 1990, while three after 1991. Seven species of these are slugs (58%); nine of adventitious species are kolonozoids, three - epecozoids.

Monoplacophora , meaning "bearing one plate", is a paraphyletic class of molluscs with a cap-like shell, inhabiting deep sea environments. Extant representatives were not recognized as such until 1952; previously they were known only from the fossil record, and were thought to have become extinct 375 million years ago. Although the shell of many monoplacophorans is limpet-like in shape, they are not gastropods, nor do they have any close relation to gastropods.

Neontology is a part of biology that, in contrast to paleontology, studies and deals with living (or, more generally, recent) organisms. It is the study of extant taxa (singular: extant taxon): taxa (such as species, genera and families) with members still alive, as opposed to (all) being extinct. For example: The Indian elephant (Elephas maximus) is an extant species, and the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) is an extinct species. The moose (Alces alces) is an extant species, and the Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus) is an extinct species. In the group of molluscs known as the cephalopods, as of 1987 there were approximately 600 extant species and 7,500 extinct species. A taxon can b…
